Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Shatil.
Hi Ben, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Israel and moved to the US when I was 4. I went to college at the University of Miami and medical school at Nova Southeastern University, so I grew up in South Florida. In 2014, I moved to New York City where I completed an anesthesiology residency and then an Obstetric Anesthesiology fellowship at Columbia University. 13 years of education later, I was finally ready for my first anesthesiologist job out of training and got a job at a large academic hospital in Atlanta, GA. While I loved medicine, the research, and teaching residents, I felt certain things in my life lacking. I had very little free time and limited vacation time and I was sleep deprived. After all of these years of training, exams, sleepless nights, and 24-hour shifts, was this really what I would settle for?
One day, I was chatting about this with my sister, Lee, a well-known microblading and makeup artist in South Florida. Knowing my love for art and sculpting, she motivated me to become my boss and open an aesthetics clinic with her as my business partner. The idea intrigued me. I grew up in a home and family full of entrepreneurs. My parents always made time for me and my two sisters, whether for dinner, homework help, or vacations, because owning their own companies allowed them to. So, I decided to give aesthetics a shot. As somewhat of a perfectionist, I started to study under some of the best injectors in the UK and the US. When I felt ready, we started booking our patients and, with luck, passion, skill, and beautiful results, YS Aesthetics took off! We went from having 2 exam rooms to 3, very quickly. Now, with a new renovation underway, we will soon have 9 exam rooms, multiple new devices, and a focus on regenerative medicine in aesthetics.
I continue practicing anesthesiology part-time, but suddenly I have much more control over my schedule and lifestyle. While I am dedicated to my medical career, I am an even better physician now that I have a more well-balanced self of personal satisfaction.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far
Obstacles and challenges are part of life for anyone. The road to becoming a physician is very taxing, but also has such beautiful rewards. I’ve had many touching experiences along the way, helping patients of all age ranges and from all walks of life.
Building a business, especially through the COVID pandemic, brought many struggles, as well. However, it’s always been my personality to find the silver lining and the light at the end of the tunnel. That ability has given me the drive to get through challenging moments and find clarity and solutions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about YS Aesthetics?
I’ve always felt that my clinic is a reflection of me and my personality. First of all, my sister and I named it after our late father (YS = Yair Shatil). The atmosphere and decor of the clinic is very calming and has a Mediterranean flair, reflecting my birthplace. Since I was young, I have always loved to draw and sculpt. Aesthetics has allowed me to combine my love of medicine and my artistic skills, sculpting faces and bodies with the perfect balance. You’ll see hints of that pottery and style around our clinic.
Finally, as an obstetric anesthesiologist, empowering women’s health has always been important to me. We run a clinic that is female-empowering and also focuses on wellness, such as micronutrient supplementation and a vaginal rejuvenation laser procedure. We also welcome the entire LGBTQI+ community with open arms and specialize in facial balancing for our transitioning patients. Because I have implemented so much of myself into this practice, it has grown organically and naturally in a beautiful way.
I am now known internationally as the Lip King and I have patients flying in from across the globe for my lip filler technique. I also specialize in facial balancing, non-surgical liquid nose jobs, non-surgical butt enlargements, and lift and non-surgical facelifts. We have many devices that offer permanent fat dissolving, acne scar treatments, skin resurfacing, and tattoo removal. We also specialize in skin care and sun-damaged skin.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from when I would visit my family in Israel. Aside from the incredible food and fun atmosphere, my grandmother introduced me to the pottery wheel.
The feeling of the clay between my fingers, and the ability to create with my two hands became intoxicating. My love for sculpting continued to flourish. Today I have found a way to combine that love with my passion for medicine.
