Community Highlights: Meet Ana Augusto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Augusto.

Hi Ana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story resembles many of the stories my clients have as well. I’m a proud daughter, immigrant, and American. My parents’ journey led me to many places, making me a bit of a globe trotter. I was born in Lobito, Angola to amazing dream-chasing parents. Having both completed elementary level education, my father became a mechanic and my mother the manager of the Singer company. After the civil war in Angola broke out, we relocated to Valencia, Venezuela. For a time, when things were calmer, my sister was born.  My family thought we would never leave.   Unfortunately, Venezuela then had a financial crisis and my parents decided to emigrate to the United States.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I came to Miami when I was 16 years old, unfamiliar with my surroundings and not having a single friend. Adjusting was hard as I was a shy, self-conscious teenager who didn’t speak the native language. As a result, I struggled to find my place and fought daily with my mom to drop out of school, find a job, and help my family financially. Clearly, I came from extremely determined parents who fought relentlessly to make sure I finished high school and pursued higher education. For my parents, making sure my sister and I became financially independent women with professional degrees was a high priority. My sister Jackie Augusto is also an attorney who focuses her practice on estate planning, guardianships and probate.

After graduating from high school, I attended the University of Bridgeport on a full scholarship and became a science teacher. As rewarding as teaching was, I decided to take a leap of faith and enrolled in law school at the University of Miami in their night program. The night program allowed me to pursue my law degree while teaching full-time.  I began my legal career working as a family law attorney for Dade Legal Aid. The training and exposure to diverse cases was instrumental in molding me as a professional. There were challenges, moments of doubt, but my parents’ never-ending support helped me get through. My parents had the wisdom to instill in my sister and me self-worth, self-love and independence to walk away from any relationship that was not a good fit.  Far too many of my clients feel trapped in broken relationships due to financial or emotional codependency.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

There are several misconceptions when it comes to the divorce process. Our Hispanic community sometimes relies heavily on the information reflected in the media they consume. Telenovelas, though entertaining, usually does not accurately represent the divorce process is in Florida. For example, there is no requirement that both people need to want to divorce one another. Another common belief is that your dirty laundry will be exposed for all to see. This causes many people to stay in unhappy marriages. A well-kept secret is that if you want to keep your dirty laundry from the public eye, your business partner or the competition, choose a collaborative divorce. Collaborative divorces were codified by the Florida legislation and any couple that elects to get divorced this way can keep their divorce settlement agreement confidential. If there is a need to enforce the agreement, the agreement can be filed in court. This prevents intrusive eyes from obtaining information. Plus, it creates a safe space while each side is represented to discuss, process, and create an agreement that will protect children and businesses. Furthermore, another benefit of using the collaborative divorce process is that each side learns to better communicate and to be more engaged as co-parents.
