Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Jeffries.
Scott, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was raised in Bucks County, outside of Philly. I went to college in Pittsburgh on a swimming scholarship and went to Law school after that. I started out as a public defender and was a litigator for most of my legal career. I moved to Florida in 2006 as it was time to change course and I haven’t looked back.
I began painting when I was a kid. My grandmother was an artist. She had died and I remember asking my mother if I could have some of her paintbrushes out of her studio. I started painting soon after that. I never went to art school. A few years ago, my friend the artist Bryce Levan Cushing encouraged me to share my art with the public and here I am
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
More than anything I want my art to be accessible and fun. I describe it as #souldoodle . Really just high-level Doodling. I try not to get mired in details and mistakes. I paint whatever comes to mind at the moment. Lately I have been focusing on abstract faces, fish and flags. I don’t use a lot of brushes and have been just pouring things out on the canvass and Let gravity take its course. I’ve been able to push things in a certain direction and the results have satisfying for me and people seem to enjoy my art. I do love the angles and geometry of a cityscape and paint a lot of those to. I like people to say to themselves. How did he get it to look like that??
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
There are definitely Artist out there that are making statements with their art. I don’t really do anything with specific intention and the viewer can interpret as they want. If I can get someone to meditate even for a moment on an issue based on what they see in my art, that’s motivating. The first flag I ever painted was titled “backwards nation” because their things going on that were bothersome to me but that was more the lawyer in me than the artist. That’s not my purpose today. I’m more interested in a positive hopeful state of mind and that gravity will again push us in a good direction.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
On November 3 I’ll have a solo exhibit at the Capital One Cafe on Atlantic Ave in Delray. In December look for me at AquaArt in South Beach Miami during Art Basel. In January I’ll be at Art Ft Lauderdale. You can always find me at Nodoso Gallery at 609 Lake Avenue, Lake Worth where I am one of the resident artists. It’s a great new gallery. Come visit us!!
