Today we’d like to introduce you to Valeriia Popova
Hi Valeriia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Valeriia Popova, an artist based in Miami, Florida, originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. Before diving into my art career, I swam professionally for the Ukrainian National Team and Florida International University. The dedication and passion driving my swimming now fuel my artistic endeavors. My love for art ignited early, kindled by my dad’s cartoon drawings, which I eagerly colored.
Encouraged by my mom, who enrolled me in art school at age 8, I began my artistic journey. Although my demanding. athletic schedule led me to become a self-taught artist, it didn’t diminish my passion. I’m constantly educating myself and learning about classic and modern art. The entire artistic process, from selecting art supplies to bringing ideas to life on fresh canvases, fills me with immense joy and satisfaction.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has not always been smooth, as transitioning from a professional athletic career to becoming a self-taught artist brought its own set of challenges. Balancing the rigorous demands of swimming with nurturing my artistic passion was one of the initial hurdles. The discipline and commitment I developed as a professional swimmer helped me in this transition, but teaching myself art also required a lot of determination and resilience.
As an artist, there were struggles with self-doubt and finding my unique voice and style. Without the structured guidance that formal art education provides, I had to rely on my perseverance and self-motivation to explore different techniques and mediums. Additionally, building a career in a creative field often involves navigating the uncertainties of gaining visibility and establishing a name within the art community.
Despite these challenges, the support and encouragement from my family, helped me stay focused on my artistic journey. Every challenge I faced has contributed to my growth and development as an artist, and the joy of creating continues to be my driving force.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my art, I love playing with the blend of whimsy and sophistication, especially through classic cartoons. There’s just something magical about capturing that carefree vibe from childhood and mixing it with some grown-up elegance. Living in Miami, I can’t help but be inspired by the city’s lively mix of cultures and styles. It really pushes me to dive into themes of nostalgia, luxury, and modern life.
I get a real kick out of reimagining beloved cartoon characters in more sophisticated settings. It’s like connecting my childhood with what I love about life today. Through my pieces, I want to spark joy and warmth, helping people reconnect with their inner kid.
What I’m most proud of is how my art can touch people’s emotions and bring back some fun memories. My style is all about that perfect mix of playful and classy, which I think sets my work apart. I aim to create pieces that make people smile and remind them of those magical, carefree childhood moments with a touch of adult grace.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those just starting out, my advice would be to embrace your unique journey and stay true to your passion. It’s important to explore different styles and techniques to find what resonates with you, but don’t feel pressured to fit into a particular mold. Art is all about expression, so let your personality shine through your work.
One thing I wish I had known when starting out is that it’s okay to face self-doubt and uncertainties. They’re a natural part of the creative process. Use them as opportunities to learn and grow rather than as obstacles. Building a community of fellow artists can also be invaluable. They can provide support, feedback, and inspiration.
Also, don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks with your art. Some of the best discoveries come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Lastly, enjoy the process! The joy you find in creating will come through in your work and resonate with others. Keep pushing forward, and remember that every piece you create is a step forward in your artistic journey.
