Today we’d like to introduce you to The Hoochie Digs Band
Hi The Hoochie Digs, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Hoochie Digs Blues Folk duo started in Louisiana in 2014, & is made up of Cher Couvillion vocals & Joey Wilson guitar. My only training in singing was in years of Catholic school choir. We got our name from my Cajun grandma, who would say Hoochie Dig when she forgot a name! We began writing music together shotly after Joey quit playing in a couple Rock bands. He is a self taught guitarist who began playing at age 12. We have written 3 albums of songs, the latest released in January, all of which are on Spotify & other streaming platforms. A Farmer’s Market in Central Louisiana was our 1st gig, & we most recently play at Oakhurst Porchfest in Decatur Georgia. In February we played the Folk & Acoustic Music Festival in Davie, Florida, & tomorrow we’ll be guests on WLRN’s Folk & Acoustic Music Show in Miami. We owe our continued local popularity to engaging with our fans, & plain old kindness. Our only true goal is to touch hearts & make folks feel they are loved in this world, & are not alone.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have had a mostly smooth ride, never really worrying where we’ll play next. Something always turns up, & surprises us. And we don’t have an agent, because we haven’t quit our day jobs! We average playing about twice a month & continue to write music. Our best paying gig was opening for a band in Ft. Pierce last October for the Levitt Concert Series. The agent found us through Local Music Finders, where we have our duo featured on their profile. Seredipity has been good. It always is.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The Hoochie Digs has been writing original music for 10 years. Our 1st album, My Baby Gone came out in 2014. Then we recorded Freedom with 17 songs. Finally, Whitewater was released end of January. We love making videos for our songs for our Youtube channel, & our last 2 music videos were filmed on a trip back home to Louisiana. We moved to Palm Beach County 2 years ago. What really makes us unique, is that we only play our songs. We can play a 3 hour set of just Hoochie Dig tunes. This makes our market smaller, however we are proud to play for more events & venues that promote the Arts. A top moment for us was playing Norton Museum of Art’s “Art After Dark” last year. The museum sought us out for our original music. Even if the crowd wants Janis Joplin, we always win them over & have them “dig the digs”!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We are so grateful to have followed our hearts from the beginning. The best advice we can give is dream, create, & move forward, even if it is one little step at a time. As our song “Live On” says, “You better grab on to a cause, & ride it til you get lost.”
