Today we’d like to introduce you to Subhan Siddique
Hi Subhan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Subhan Siddique, a 24-year-old Software Engineer and content creator based in Miami. First allow me to share my journey into the world of software development.
I grew up in a low-income household in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Financial struggles were a constant, but my parents, who immigrated from Pakistan, emphasized the importance of money and the unique opportunities available in the United States. When I was 13, my parents asked about my career aspirations. Unsure of my path, I turned to Google and searched for the highest-paying jobs in America. After skipping all the roles in the medical field, since I knew for a fact I was not interested in that, I discovered Software Engineering, a field where one can earn a six-figure salary right after obtaining an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Given my aptitude for math, I decided this was the path for me.
Academically, I wasn’t an exceptional student and often found myself in trouble at school. This led my parents to move from New York to New Jersey, where I attended high school and graduated with a 3.0 GPA. I enrolled in the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in Manhattan, College of Engineering in Manhattan. I was initially majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering, then I switched to Computer Science my sophomore year because I realized there no reason for me to take electrical classes if I just wanted to be a Software Engineer.
During college, I did not pursue internships, focusing instead on enjoying my time there. This decision posed a challenge when job hunting, as I lacked practical experience. After applying to about 1,000 positions, I finally received offers in my senior year, with the best one being from a fintech company in Sunrise, Florida. I accepted it.
I was so nervous to move. All my friends and family are in NJ/NY. I knew no one in Florida and I was moving completely by my self, all alone. My company did help me financially with the move, Despite my nervousness about moving away from family and friends in NJ/NY, I took the leap. I was 22 at the time and I told myself, this is the time where I can pack up and go to a new city and start am life. I am so happy I did.
At 22, I moved to Fort Lauderdale to save on rent and gradually familiarized myself with the area. Growing up in NYC, I always dreamt of living in a high-rise apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows and a city view. Eventually, I moved to Downtown/Brickell Miami to fulfill this dream, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I love it here.
The experience of relocating made me more independent and confident, which sparked my interest in content creation. I began making content to share my experiences as a Software Engineer and my life in Miami, aiming to inspire and motivate others. My goal is not monetary success but to build a community focused on daily improvement. If I can inspire even one person to pursue a career in Software Engineering or to embrace the adventure of moving to a new city, I’ll consider my efforts worthwhile. It’s all about making an impact.
Currently, I produce YouTube videos and reels/TikToks about both tech and my personal life. You can follow my journey on social media: for personal vlogs, @TheSubhanEffect, and for Software Engineering content, @FatherOfFunctions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With all success comes a fair share of struggles. I faced significant challenges while trying to land my first role as a Software Engineer. I remember dedicating countless hours each day to interview preparation, tirelessly working until I could confidently tackle technical interview questions.
Balancing a full-time job with content creation can also be overwhelming. The demands of both can be intense, but the passion for sharing my experiences and inspiring others keeps me motivated.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I embarked on my content creation journey to share my experiences as a Software Engineer and to document my life in Miami, with the hope of inspiring and motivating others. What sets me apart is my unique personality. I enjoy all the fun and partying that life has to offer, but I am also highly professional when it comes to my job and creating content. My primary objective isn’t to achieve monetary success but to foster a community dedicated to daily self-improvement and growth.
Through my content, I aspire to be a source of encouragement for anyone considering a career in Software Engineering or contemplating the exciting yet daunting prospect of relocating to a new city. Seeing my social media presence grow slowly but steadily fills me with pride. If I can motivate even a single person to follow their dreams, take bold steps, and strive for their goals, I will feel that my efforts have been truly worthwhile.
As a Software Engineer, I focus primarily on developing robust and efficient back-end APIs using Java and Kotlin. My responsibilities include ensuring that our applications perform flawlessly in production environments, which involves meticulous monitoring and maintenance to prevent and resolve any issues that may arise. I am dedicated to optimizing the user experience, striving to provide seamless and reliable service to our customers. By implementing best practices in coding and system architecture, I work to guarantee that our applications remain stable, responsive, and capable of handling user demands effectively.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In my content creation career, over the next 5 to 10 years, I aspire to significantly grow my audience and influence on social media platforms. My goal is to amass a following of at least one million followers on Instagram and TikTok. Additionally, I aim to build a substantial presence on YouTube, reaching a milestone of 100,000 subscribers. I plan to achieve this through consistent, high-quality content that resonates with my audience and engages them in meaningful ways.
Simultaneously, in my Software Engineering career, my ambition for the next 5 to 10 years is to transition into a more managerial role. I envision myself taking on leadership responsibilities, where I can guide, inspire, and mentor young engineers. My objective is to foster a supportive and innovative environment, encouraging the growth and development of upcoming talent in the field. By leveraging my experience and skills, I aim to shape the next generation of engineers, helping them to navigate their careers and achieve their professional goals.
