Today we’d like to introduce you to Phelicia Dell.
Phelicia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am Phelicia Dell, an artist, designer, entrepreneur, and cultural storyteller whose journey has always been rooted heritage. Born and raised in Haiti, I grew up surrounded by art, craftsmanship, color, and tradition, all of which deeply shaped my vision and identity as a creator.
My professional journey began with a passion for transforming everyday materials into meaningful works of art. Over time, that passion evolved into VèVè Collections, a fashion and lifestyle brand inspired by Haitian culture. I sought to create pieces that were not only beautiful, but carry the stories, history, and soul of Haiti.
One of the defining moments in my career came when my work received international recognition after winning the “Best Emerging Handbag Designer” competition launched by Diane von Furstenberg. This opportunity opened doors for media features, exhibitions, fashion shows, and collaborations that allowed me to share Haitian artistry with a global audience.
Today, my work extends beyond fashion. I am involved in cultural preservation, community empowerment, and youth development through initiatives like A Golden Thread, which supports art education and artisan training in Haiti. I continue to design, curate exhibitions, create collections, and build spaces where art, culture, and entrepreneurship can thrive together.
Everything I create is driven by purpose: celebrating identity, empowering artisans, preserving culture, and inspiring the next generation to see beauty and possibility in their roots.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. One of the greatest challenges I have faced has been the current situation in Haiti. Because of the instability and insecurity, I was forced to close my boutique and workshop, spaces that represented years of hard work and collaboration with artisans.
This period has been incredibly difficult, both personally and professionally. It affects production, access to materials, and the ability to maintain a stable business environment. But even through these challenges, I refused to let my creativity disappear. I continue to find ways to work, design, and keep my art alive despite the circumstances.
Instead of giving up, I focused on reinventing my approach, building new opportunities internationally, collaborating with artisans whenever possible, and continuing to use fashion and art as a way to preserve culture and inspire hope.
These obstacles strengthen my vision and remind me that creativity can survive even in the most challenging environments.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an artist and entrepreneur, my work is deeply connected to culture, storytelling, and craftsmanship. Through VèVè Collections and my artistic projects, I create fashion, accessories, costumes, and cultural experiences inspired by Haitian heritage, spirituality, and identity. I specialize in blending art with fashion design, using handmade techniques, symbolic patterns, and artisan craftsmanship to create pieces that are both meaningful and timeless.
Over the years, I have been recognized for my unique artistic vision and for using creativity as a tool for cultural preservation and empowerment. One of the things I am most proud of is building a platform that showcases Haitian artistry to the world, and creates opportunities for artisans, women, and young creatives.
Another proud moment in my career has been the launch of my new line, *“Timeless Elegance”* by Phelicia Dell, available at pheliciadell.com. This collection celebrates 20 years of commitment, passion, and dedication to the arts.
This milestone would not have been possible without the incredible support and teamwork of many talented individuals, friends in Miami who believed in my vision and helped bring it to life. I am especially grateful to Presley Liger, Jimmy Moise, and Goldie Peralte. The list is truly extensive, and it would take a long time to name every single person who contributed to this beautiful journey.
“Timeless Elegance” represents more than a collection, it is a celebration of culture, artistry, collaboration, and the people who have supported me throughout these years of creation and growth.
At the same time, one of the most important roles I have ever had in life is being a mother. Beyond all professional accomplishments, that journey is the one I am most proud of. Being a mother has taught me strength, patience, resilience, and unconditional love, qualities that have also shaped the way I lead, create, and inspire others through my work.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine art, fashion, history, and social impact into everything I create. My work is about telling stories, honoring heritage, and creating beauty with purpose.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Over the past 20 years, I have been blessed with many beautiful souls who have supported me and encouraged me to keep moving forward no matter the challenges. The list is truly endless, and I carry deep gratitude for every person who has believed in me and in my vision.
Above all, I thank my guiding angel for the light, wisdom, strength, and inspiration that continue to guide my journey.
My mother Manicile, my daughter Benaëlle Benoit, my family, my team in Haiti; Mario Barreau, Marjorie Mars,JO, Vlad and all my artisans; they are my everyday heroes, they have been my foundation and my rock. Their love, sacrifices, talent, and support have helped me continue creating even during the most difficult moments.
I am also deeply grateful for my friends, supporters, fans, and loyal customers, who are truly the heartbeat of my art. Their encouragement and appreciation have given meaning and purpose to my work throughout the years.
I would also like to recognize my mentors, Danielle St Lot, Marie Alice Théard, and Rachelle Piverger, whose guidance, wisdom, and encouragement have played an important role in my growth, both personally and professionally.
None of this would have been possible alone. Every collection, piece of art, and accomplishment carries a part of the people who believed in me along the way.
