Check Out Monica Uribe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Uribe.

Hi Monica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York. I’ve lived in and have loved Miami since 1979. I came to yoga not through trend—but through necessity. After 3 separate car accidents (thanks Miami drivers!) I needed relief from chronic neck and back injuries. Every doctor I saw suggested I try yoga. So yoga is what I did and I became a yoga teacher.
That experience changed everything. Always seeking information I’ve study Hatha and vinyasas yoga, sound healing, mindfulness, meditation, the chakra system, and became a Reiki Master. I teach from a place of lived experience and a specialized approach that blends my knowledge and esoteric experience.
After teaching yoga for many years new injuries slowed me down again. Looking for a gentler way to heal, and out of desperation I jumped into the water and discovered the world of Aqua Yoga. Aqua Yoga isn’t a new gimmicky style of yoga it’s been around a 20+ years helping the disabled. Moving in water offers instant relief: pressure lifts, pain eases, and the body feels supported in a way it never can on land. Moods shifted dramatically as well. With Aqua Yoga, my work outs became more like “pool days” – so fun, I was hooked!
Today, I work with a wide range of clients—from older adults to professional athletes, from desk-bound office workers to anyone navigating stress, back pain, and weight challenges. My sessions blending Aqua Yoga, floating meditations and energy clearing. They are gentle, deeply restorative, and designed for real bodies with real needs—not performative yoga, but practical healing.
Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing anxiety, or just need space to breathe, I like to offer a supported path back to the body and our sense of self—one breath, one float, one gentle movement at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggles have been real from friends not wanting to wet their hair to Covid closing the yoga industry including the aquatic gym I taught at. To more of my own juries this time leading to back surgery. Dealing with the shadow side of my psyche and the dark side of recovery. Aqua yoga Level 2 training came at the perfect time for me. As I used my own situation as the case study for my training. Water is magic for the body and mind, mood, outlook.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My career began in television, where I spent over a decade as a producer and copywriter, working with networks like Discovery Channel and HBO. The fast-paced, high-pressure environment taught me how to communicate clearly, think creatively, and connect with all kinds of people. But over time, the stress took a toll—especially as I navigated my own physical limitations from chronic neck and back pain.

Eventually, I shifted paths and became a full-time yoga teacher. What started as personal healing became a professional calling. I now draw from my background in media, my experience with injury, and the realities of demanding careers to create a space where others can slow down, reconnect, and heal. My work is rooted in empathy, real-life experience, and the belief that everyone—no matter their body or background—deserves support on their wellness journey

Any big plans?
When you have lived more years than you have to look forward to you live life from a place of “yes.
I am finalizing aqua yoga themed ebooks based on my work with clients.
