Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Gomez.
Hi Melanie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Since I was only able to utter a word, I have wanted to be a nurse. My close friends always said I would make a great nurse because of my caring nature. I’ve always been known for looking out for others. During high school, I made sure that I volunteered at different healthcare-related events and even at hospitals to gain as much experience as possible.
Once I graduated, I applied for my first full-time job at a healthcare facility where I worked closely with nurses in the home health industry. Fast forward to 2022, I’ve been a registered nurse for 2 years, completed two travel assignments, and am now orienting to be a pediatric intensive care nurse. I’ve always dreamed of working with the pediatric population. With work and dedication, nothing is impossible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not a smooth road. Nursing school has been one of the hardest experiences of my life. Many times I didn’t think I could push through. It was a rigorous accelerated program and I was working full time. I missed out on many important family gatherings and plans. The journey was not an easy one.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am now a pediatric critical care nurse. I’ve been a medical surgical nurse for 2 years. I’ve traveled out of state and out of the city to complete travel assignments, as well. I am most proud of my degree in nursing. I worked very hard to obtain it and I proved to myself that I can do anything that I set myself to do in life. I am known for filming Tik Toks via @cafeconscrubs. I make humorous videos about nurses in Miami both in English and Spanish.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Determination. Regardless of the hardships that I may face, I will continue to try and try again. I don’t give up easily. That’s part of the way I achieved my nursing degree. Some classes were so difficult that I never thought it possible to pass. But I was determined to succeed.
