Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Micanovic
Hi Marina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my fashion journey immediately after graduating from a fashion academy in Italy, 14 years ago. Following a few regional competitions and fashion shows in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Macedonia, I developed a strong vision for my designs and presentations in major fashion centers, even though I wasn’t sure how to reach them. Despite the uncertainty, I firmly believed that I would succeed one day.
At the time, I was designing unique, limited-edition clothing. The turning point came when I presented my collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) for the first time in February 2016, and again in September of the same year. This experience motivated me to move to the US and restart my career, taking advantage of the numerous opportunities New York offers to express my creativity while maintaining high European standards.
In 2020, I decided to take my career in a new direction by creating the brand UniUkiyo. This brand focuses on uniquely designed bags that offer customers versatile options, such as a bag that can transform into a vest or jacket, and small clutch and pocket bags. These innovative designs quickly gained significant attention.
Today, UniUkiyo has grown into a large team, fostering new collaborations and participating in various exhibitions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey involves many processes and challenges. In some ways, it is smooth thanks to visions and creativity, but it definitely requires a lot of hard work. The positive aspect of new and innovative ideas is that I have developed some products that did not previously exist. However, the hard part is reaching the market and introducing these products as something very new and good. We guarantee quality and innovative style, but it takes time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the fashion designer and owner of the brand Uniukiyo, I have been dedicated to the fashion industry for 14 years. In a relatively short time, my brand has garnered significant attention, becoming highly recognizable. My designs are a blend of street style and elegance, creating a unique aesthetic that stands out in the fashion world.
I specialize in creating distinctive clothing and accessories, with each piece serving as a fashion statement. My previous collections are known for their uniqueness, and I apply the same creativity and craftsmanship to designing my bags. Every item I produce is different from anything else on the market, showcasing my commitment to innovation and style.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Throughout my fashion journey, I have been fortunate to have many people involved in building this brand with me. They are not just part of the team but also friends who listen to my customers and understand the vision we share. Their contributions are invaluable.
The first I will start with my mentor who believes in me from beginning of my study Lidija Jovanovic
On several occasions, close friends have given me ideas to enhance my designs, which in turn sparked new inspirations for me. I cherish this reciprocal relationship where I inspire others, and they inspire me. One of them is Boyko Ivanov
A key member of my team is Andrea Ilincic, our fashion stylist and creative consultant. Her expertise in promoting and marketing has been crucial to our success. Additionally, the fashion photographers Petar Pavlov and Ilija Ristic and videographers Petar Pavlov I’ve collaborated with over the years have consistently presented my work in the best light.
Technical support is another vital aspect of our operations, and I must acknowledge the dedicated individuals who ensure everything runs smoothly.
Lastly, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support from my family, friends, PR team, marketing team, and everyone else who plays a role in making this journey possible.
