Today we’d like to introduce you to Loye Hawkins.
Hi Loye, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been sponsoring an open jam jam session for six years. During covid we jamed in a beautiful outdoor area that allowed for safe distance and still gave everyone a chance to let loose. I run the sessions a little different from most in that the musicians are allowed to play more than just two songs. Currently we jam every Sunday at Amarone Italian Restaurant, 15400 Biscayne Blv. Aventura, FL.
Professional musicians are always welcome. Our play time is 2pm to 5pm.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been lucky getting good musicians that want to be a part of this creation. Over the years we’ve had several locations that were fun, and challenging, but I feel we’ve honed in perfectly at our current one. I think my main challenge has always been to make sure I can get enough money to compensate my primary rhythm group. Somehow I always seem to make it all happen. I find it fun and fulfilling.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It’s a jazz jam session, we host musicians from in and out of town. Our affiliation with the Sunshine Jazz Organization at times has been helpful, and always in need of. We are currently being considered for grants and endowments to further extend our mission into the community.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those just starting: be willing to make a full and unending commitment.
I wish I’d known how much dedication is required.
