Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Colletti. She shares her story with us below.
Kim was born in Connecticut, where she attended high school and began rowing. She went on to row in college at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2007, she began working on motor yachts seasonally while she finished college. Upon graduating from Northeastern in 2009, with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, she left Boston to work on a boat.
In 2010, she moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL to continue working in the Marine Industry. Kim continued working on motor yachts for a few years. It was after a falling incident that led to a concussion that forced her out of the industry. This was a blessing in disguise. Kim’s back began to heal.
How Yoga Began
Everyone begins their yoga journey for different reasons, and Kim began it as a tool for injury recovery. As a collegiate rower, she sustained a back injury that never seemed to heal. After committing to Physical Therapy and cortisone shots, Kim was on her way to recovery, which eventually plateaued. This led her to yoga and Kim immediately fell in love with the practice.
Around 2013, Kim became much more serious about her commitment to the practice. Not only has her back seen incredible improvement, but the strength in her body and mind has also grown. Today I am in New Jersey building a story with my amazing partner, restarting my business, and focusing more on private sessions in New York/New Jersey and Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. My partner and I will be hosting retreats together in the future. He is a music producer and DJ.
With each unique journey, comes a unique style of teaching. Kim is particularly affected by and interested in body mechanics. Assists and anatomical alignments are the main focus of her practice and teaching. As a community, we are all able to learn from each other’s journeys, and Kim continues to be open and interested in learning from all students and teaching peers. Everyone has their own path and process. Trust yourself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Restarting my business twice was difficult but it made me the person I am today. I know that I am capable to recreate what I once had. The past year and relocating as well as having clients in my past home is difficult. I will be looking to travel a lot more in the next couple of years taking my expertise wherever we end up!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a yoga teacher. I focus on private clientele both online and in person. I have a lot of experience with athletes both professional and avid gym goers. My classes are all specialized for the students on an individual base as well as in the classroom (as best as I can get – this is pretty difficult when you have a classroom setting).
The classroom classes are very strength oriented and focus a lot on movement with breath – which a lot of us forget to apply under the physical and mental stress during practice. I also work on a lot of different mobility exercises and transitions.
I am proud of all the knowledge I acquired and will always strive to learn more. I try to always have a student mind and learn from everyone and everything, which is sometimes easier said than done but that is something that I admire about myself. I am also proud of how far I have come from when I started.
