Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaymarie Daniel
Hi Kaymarie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
MarieKays started when I was at home in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, using my grandmother’s old sewing machine to try and make the swimsuits I wanted but couldn’t afford. After seeing my creations, my family, friends, and boyfriend encouraged me to start my own business. At first, I was scared of potential rejection and unsure how my peers and target market would respond.
However, when I had the chance to showcase my first collection at an annual talent show on my island, Bequia, the response was overwhelmingly positive. MarieKays took off almost immediately, which was beyond my wildest dreams, and I was thrilled.
The brand grew rapidly and became one of the go-to names in St. Vincent, but I wasn’t ready to stop there. I decided to migrate to Miami to attend fashion school. I realized that while I had taught myself so much already, formal education could elevate my skills even further.
In less than a year in the U.S., I was given numerous opportunities to be interviewed and showcase my brand. The feedback I received, especially about how my culture influences my designs, was incredible. I was even invited to showcase my pieces at this year’s Posh on Purpose fashion show, and since then, I’ve been getting calls for other shows.
I’ve always wanted to be known for my work and seeing it all come together has been incredibly rewarding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely been a challenging journey, far from smooth. Financial struggles have been a constant hurdle for me, and starting a business requires significant resources. Despite these obstacles, I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have come into my life and supported me. Their help has been invaluable, and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without their support.
After being encouraged to start my business, my main excuse was always that I didn’t have the money. Then one day, I came home to find that my aunt had bought all the materials I needed for my collection without me even asking. That moment was a turning point for me.
Aside from financial challenges, everything I did was self-taught, which meant a lot of trial and error. This process was incredibly time-consuming and often frustrating. Moving to Miami to run my business while attending school made those struggles even more intense. Balancing both was a huge challenge, but my faith and the support of the people around me have been crucial in keeping me going. Their encouragement and belief in me have been a constant source of strength through the tough times.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer specializing in luxurious swimwear and resort wear for both men and women. My designs and aesthetic have always spoken for themselves, which has been my goal from the very beginning. What sets me apart is my unique approach to shapes and my deep understanding of different body types and comfort levels.
I place a strong emphasis on trend forecasting and knowing my target market, which I believe is crucial for success in this industry. While it’s hard for me to pinpoint a single proudest moment because there have been so many surreal opportunities and results, I’m always thrilled when someone sees my designs and immediately recognizes them as mine. That recognition is genuinely the best feeling ever.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Miami truly feels like a home away from home for me. The warmth of the city is wonderful, but what really stands out is its vibrant art scene and the rich blend of cultures. As someone deeply inspired by my own cultural heritage, I find that Miami perfectly complements my creative vision. It’s a place where I can be surrounded by diverse influences and artistic energy, making it an ideal setting for my work and personal growth.
