Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby B.
Hi Gabby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Brazil, raised in France, and now reside in South Florida. I speak three languages (Portuguese, French, and English) and can sing in a fourth (Spanish). I have been doing music professionally for about 5 years now, although it has been a passion of mine my whole life. I was fortunate to find a team around me that was a major part of getting my start in the industry and has been pivotal in helping me throughout my career.
With their guidance and support, together we have been able to accomplish many goals and break through various obstacles along the way. I am a very visual type of artist and I love to express myself with my attire and my stage presence. I love to create my own rhinestone bras and wear them for many of my music videos, performances, and social media content that I do.
I consider myself a performer because when I get on stage, I put on a show. I do belly dance, samba, street jazz, and many other styles of dance. I’m all about energy and good vibes! I believe everyone has their own uniqueness about themselves and that you should never change who you are for anybody else. I always tell my supporters to be you, do you, and wear whatever heck you want!
An only child to parents who know all about being in the spotlight—her mother, Michelle Honnie, delighted audiences as a Samba dancer and singer; her father, Mestre Leitao, has gained international renown as a Brazilian martial arts master in the discipline of capoeira (which combines dance, acrobatics, and spirituality)—Gabby grew up on the move.
Her family left Brazil when she was 3, settling in Avignon, in the southeastern Provence region of France. Seven years later, they moved to North America, where Gabby spent middle school and ninth grade shuffling between Massachusetts and Canada. The family finally settled in South Florida; Gabby spent two years at Broward County High School before finishing her senior year at home.
What happened during her traditional classroom years speaks to her current role as an official ambassador for Boo2Bullying, a youth development and suicide prevention nonprofit that offers resources and support for those who’ve struggled with bullying and discrimination.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had my own share of personal struggles such as anxiety, ADHD, and various challenges. Also, there’s a negative reputation often associated with the music industry and I’ve had to figure out ways to overcome this. The business side of the industry can be extremely cutthroat. You have to know who you can really trust and who is really just in it for themselves.
Thankfully, more often than not, I can rely on my dedicated team to handle the business aspects, allowing myself to remain focused on the artistic areas. I feel that it’s important to share these vulnerabilities with my supporters. By openly discussing my own hardships, I try to create a safe space for my listeners, allowing them to feel understood and empowered. I hope that by sharing my journey, I can inspire others to overcome their own obstacles and pursue their passions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Gabby has accumulated many musical accolades in her short career. Her single “Pose” charted in the top 5 on iTunes pop charts and 15 overall in South Africa in 2021. In 2022, her single “Dance All Night” charted 75 on the iTunes pop chart in Hong Kong. She followed this up with one viral music video after another, tallying millions of views on songs such as “Belly Dancer”, “Pretty Girl Lit”, “Earthquake”, “Nothing To Me”, and “One Too Many.”
Gabby has shared the stage with artists the likes of Flo Rida, Ja Rule, Justina Valentine, and many more. Gabby has headlined various events such as the Stonewall Pride Festival and DAER Nightclub’s Jingle Ball After Party. Meanwhile, Gabby’s Latin pop crossover single “Leche” was featured on NBC Miami’s South Florida Live and WSVN FOX’s Deco Drive.
While charting at #22 on iTunes Italy Latino Chart and #6 on the Japan Latino Chart, “Leche” has also garnered airplay support from Pitbull’s Globalization on Sirius XM from DJ Laz and DJ Xray, as well as WBTT 105.5 The Beat. Her Reggaeton single “Si No Sabias” charted at #4 on the iTunes Japan Latino Chart. Just recently, her single “Brazilian Funk” charted on the iTunes Portugal Pop Chart at #3, and #33 for all genres.
Gabby B is a versatile talent based in South Florida, where she co-owns the independent label, Muy Bueno. She is intricately involved in her artistic process, from choreography creation to designing and crafting her performance costumes, showcasing her multifaceted skill set.
Gabby B is also an official ambassador with the non-profit Boo2Bullying, a youth development and suicide prevention organization providing mentoring opportunities, educational resources, and mental health support to youth and families adversely affected by bullying. Boo2Bullying connects with over 30,000 young people in person and many more online.
“I’d say what makes me stand out in my field is my ability to show my creativity through visuals and concepts that go along with the music I put out. For me, every song has its own unique story that I take people through by allowing everyone to come along the journey with me.”
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I would say it’s learning that although you should definitely listen to other people’s advice, you ultimately have to trust yourself and your ideas. Early on, I was new in the industry, so I let others take control even though I didn’t always like the outcome.
Nowadays, I make sure things are done the way I like them, even if it comes off as a bit annoying. At the end of the day, I’m the artist and it’s my image being put out there, not someone else’s. Always be you and do you!
