Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther George.
Hi Esther, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first started, I never imagined that I’d be here today doing what I’ve always dreamed of. My venture into the world of calligraphy began as a hobby that gradually evolved into something more. I started by crafting cards, illustrating quotes, and creating small signs for friends and family. However, I’ve always been drawn to the wedding industry. In 2017, I had the chance to make my first wooden sign for my cousin’s engagement party and never looked back. Since then I’ve had the privilege of having my work published in WedLuxe Magazine, along with my own wedding which was featured in Today’s Bride.
Aside from weddings, my passion lies within the live events industry. I love the opportunity to showcase this type of artistry and create a big impact through small details. Live events are not just ordinary gatherings; they hold significant importance for brands and companies. These occasions serve as a platform for them to unveil new products, share groundbreaking ideas, or express their gratitude to valued customers and dedicated staff members. It’s their way of saying, “Look at what we’ve achieved,” or “Thank you for being a part of our journey.” Now, here’s where the magic of personalization comes into play. It’s like adding that extra sparkle to an already special event. By infusing my artistry into these occasions, I go the extra mile to ensure that every guest feels truly appreciated and seen. It’s about creating a connection, leaving a lasting impression, and making people feel like they’re a part of something extraordinary.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today has had its fair share of bumps and challenges, like any entrepreneurial journey. In the beginning, I had to invest a significant amount of time and effort into honing my calligraphy skills. It took patience and persistence to reach a level where I could offer high-quality custom pieces, and this continues to be an ongoing journey and process as my style continues to evolve.
As I transitioned from a hobby to a full fledged business, it also meant that I had to learn about the financial and administrative aspects of running a small business. Having established processes in place is extremely important to ensure that clients have a smooth and uncomplicated experience working with me. This balancing act between creativity and business was a learning curve, but taught me valuable lessons along the way.
Managing a high volume of orders and bookings during peak event seasons can also be demanding. There were moments when things didn’t go as planned, whether it was a project that didn’t turn out as expected or logistical challenges in meeting deadlines. These setbacks taught me resilience and problem-solving skills, and how to ensure that the client experience is as smooth as possible.
Finally, building a client base, especially in a highly competitive industry, was also challenging. It not only required marketing and showcasing my work, but the effort to step out of my comfort zone and create genuine connections with others in my industry. I love the opportunity to connect with managers, directors, entrepreneurs and fellow artists – learning more about their journey and unique stories. Creating these meaningful connections ultimately creates life long partnerships and embraces the value of ‘community over competition’.
Overcoming obstacles has not only strengthened my skills as a calligrapher and business owner but has also added depth to my journey. It’s a reminder that growth often comes from facing and overcoming difficulties along the way.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that risk-taking is an essential part of personal and professional growth. While I wouldn’t classify myself as an extreme risk-taker, I do recognize the value of taking calculated risks in my journey as a small business owner. One significant risk I took this year was the decision to transition to building a full-fledged business. This involved investing time and resources in building my skills, investing in creative tools, setting up an online presence, marketing my services, and building professional relationships.
In my perspective, risk-taking should be a calculated process. It involves evaluating potential rewards against potential setbacks and having a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected. While taking risks can be daunting, it often leads to valuable experiences and opportunities for growth. Ultimately, it’s important to strike a balance between risk and caution, aligning your choices with your long-term goals and aspirations.
