Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Umana Cardona.
Eduardo, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and brought to the United States at age 1 to Long Beach, California, with only my sister and my mother and with little to no money. Seeing my mother raise two kids on her own wasn’t easy and suffered through many hardships to the point where we were bouncing from house to house, not knowing where we would sleep the next night. Most of this I wouldn’t possibly remember… I was too young, but it was also thanks to my mother’s protection. What I do remember was her putting me into everything and anything to bring some sort of light to my life or mostly to distract me from what was happening around me whether it was painting, building model airplanes, and soccer. The turning point was when I moved to Jacksonville. Growing up i didn’t really understand how every step you take and everyone you meet would truly shape the person you become and when I started high school not knowing what to expect in a new city, new town, and different people, I met my first friend which was Khalil Osborne(@khalilosborne) which influenced the very path on how I would emerge as an artist.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
LANES LANES and LANES. To talk about the art my friends and I do is very difficult to describe as we try to reach every aspect of any art as far as we can push it. As an artist, I think it is important to perfect one form and then go to the other in order to broaden one’s many talents and discover hidden ones. With the help of my friends I have been able to be apart of big local shows with my installation art pieces, created clothing with certain themes or idea of self love/improvement such as the “Live Young” and “Conquer” series(found on my Instagram), and creating graphic design artwork for myself and others, but there is one lane that has really meant the most which is singing. Singing was a way for me to express to myself and to others that it is okay to have demons, but it is how you channel them is what really matters…to convert them into something beautiful… isn’t that what all art should be about? Channeling your feelings into something great? I guess thats what you can say I try to do in all I lay my hands on.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success to me is never limiting yourself to one direction in life. Many people set limits on their selves, whether it is following an expectation set by society/others or feeling that they can only do one set thing. In life, there are many different lanes you can go through, but in my opinion, true success is going through each lane failing and going back through another until you can truly find the best 1, 2, or 3 lanes maybe even more than they are good at! Just look at artists from our generation. Ranging from music to fashion and from fashion to owning businesses. Learning to branch out in different avenues and accept failure in order to accomplish one’s dreams and achieve happiness thats what I believe true success lies.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Instagram! It was crazy to believe that this one platform can lead you to so many other avenues of art such as websites, and different portfolios. Links to my music can be found in the bio of my Instagram. All my social media can be found under the name @eddyucardona. Currently, I am going to be featured in my first live performance at the end of the month, and I hope to have many more to come in the later future.
I will soon have a website where I will not only post my music but other avenues of art, so STAY TUNED!
