Today we’d like to introduce you to David Farias.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where I grew up with an almost obsessive fascination with media. As a kid, I would beg my parents to take me as a guest to TV shows, and as a teenager I was already writing, directing and filming my own movies and series with my sister and cousins. That passion never left me.
My first professional experience came at 17, when I had the opportunity to work on the production of a major launch event for Polar Light, a new beer by Empresas Polar, one of Venezuela’s biggest corporations. That experience confirmed everything I already felt inside: this was the world I belonged to.
I went on to study Social Communication with an Audiovisual major at Universidad Rafael Belloso Chacín, and during my studies I was already working simultaneously as a radio host, TV presenter and producer at some of Maracaibo’s most important stations.
In 2009, I became General Producer of a nationally broadcasted show called “Te Ponemos en las Buenas,” produced from Zulia State for Venevisión.
A few years later, in 2013, I joined the production team of “Todo por la Corona,” the first-ever beauty pageant reality show in Venezuelan history, produced by Sony Entertainment Television and Venevisión, a true milestone in Latin American television.
After emigrating to Medellin, Colombia in 2018, I founded my own agency, Impala Media, which I currently run alongside my husband. During that chapter I also had the privilege of producing content for History Channel’s digital ecosystem on YouTube, through a project called “Locos por History” for A&E Networks.
In 2024 I moved to Miami, and since then I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects like Latin Billboard and American Business Forum. Most recently, I was part of the production team for Netflix’s first-ever live broadcast for Latin America the Supernova Génesis project, streamed to over 190 countries, as well as the art department of a commercial for the Colombian National Soccer Team.
Today I continue to lead Impala Media, and I also host my own podcast, Los Esenciales, on my YouTube channel, where I explore the stories and ideas that truly matter.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. Like millions of Venezuelans, I had to leave my country, and that wasn’t an easy decision. One of the hardest moments was seeing my family’s business expropriated by the government in 2009. That shook us, and in many ways it accelerated the path that followed.
Starting over in Colombia was also a real challenge. Building something from scratch in a new country takes a kind of resilience you don’t fully realize you have until you’re already in it.
Something I didn’t anticipate was how much I’d struggle with the shift to social media. I came from traditional broadcasting, television, radio, large-scale productions, and suddenly the rules had changed completely. It felt uncomfortable at first, honestly.
What helped was founding Impala Media. Running a digital marketing agency forced me to understand that world deeply, and somewhere along the way I actually fell in love with it. I also just had things I wanted to say and create, and that need kept pushing me forward. I’m glad it did, because today I feel like I’m in the right place professionally.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work across production, art department coordination, and content creation, and I also have a background as a radio and TV host. That combination of being comfortable both in front of and behind the camera has shaped the way I approach every project.
Some of the work I’m most proud of: my first nationally broadcasted show, “Te Ponemos en las Buenas” on Venevisión, which was a big milestone for me because it meant crossing over from regional to national television. More recently, working on the Latin Billboards and being part of the production team for Supernova Génesis, broadcasted by Netflix, in collaboration with Darmah, a production design company.
What sets me apart, I think, is versatility. Over the years I’ve built a skill set that allows me to step into many different roles depending on what a project needs, and I think that makes me a more useful collaborator on any production.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always the kid who was organizing something. I threw parties, created events, and by the time I was in high school I had already produced my own graduation party. Looking back, I was producing long before I even knew what that word meant professionally.
But I think what truly defines me, and has always defined me, is the drive to entertain. To create experiences that people remember. Whether it was a school party or a nationally broadcasted show, the scale changes, but the motivation is the same.
