Check Out Darenda Darnell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darenda Darnell.

Hi Darenda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for flowers began at an early age. Growing up in my Grandmother’s flower shop, I learned every aspect of the business through the years. In 2000 I purchased that very shop located at 240 S. Krome Avenue and rebranded it as Designs by Darenda Flowers & Events. This year will mark the shop’s 25th year in business as President and Lead Designer. Over the years my floral designs have been part of numerous weddings, industry events and have been featured on television.
In 2007 I joined The Florida State Florists’ Association where I jumped right in and became a District Director for Miami-Dade County. In 2009 I earned accreditation as a Florida State Master Designer. The following year I was elected Vice President. In 2013 I was elected President of the association and served two terms. Also, in 2013, I was inducted into Society of American Florists American Academy of Floriculture. Continuing on with my design education I became an AIFD Certified Floral Designer and in 2015 was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design. Also in 2015, I was invited to serve as Trustee of the AIFD Foundation representing the Florida Florist Fund and served on the Foundation board for two years. Currently, I am happy to be back on the board with the Florida State Florists’ Association International with a group of people I call my Floral Family.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The floral industry is one that definitely keeps you on your toes but I’m a problem solver and always figure out a solution to whatever challenges come my way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My floral passion is combining unique colors and blooms from all over the world. Looking back on the memories that have been created for people is what makes my heart the happiest. Taking an idea and turning it into a design that conveys a sentiment for someone else is my joy. Seeing the look on my client’s faces when they finally see their flowers for the big day makes it all worth the long hours.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Whether it’s just by giving the shop a follow on the socials or purchasing from the shop’s site www.designsbydarenda.com. It’s all about supporting one another and shopping local
