Today we’d like to introduce you to Azazus. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Dennis Lee Walton Jr (born: January 14, 1993 [age 29]), better known professionally as Azazus, is an American musician.
Early Life: Azazus was born on January 14, 1993, in Mobile, Alabama. Son of: the late Dennis Lee Walton Sr. (American Army Veteran & Independent Gospel Artist); Dorothy Walton (American Relief Teacher); and nephew of Weston Prim (American Music Artist known for his association with the band Blacklash, and Charlie Blade).
He was known to create songs and showcase the sounds at local functions throughout his childhood at Foley High School & Foley Civic Center. He was performing at events at the age of 14. He graduated in 2019 with an AA in Business from Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL before going into full-time entertainment.
Now based in Florida, Azazus went Viral on TikTok & YouTube in 2020 when his song “Onlyfans” accumulated over a million views from content creators using the sound. The artist documented many of the viral moments from this song in the highlight section of his verified Instagram profile.
He was the most-nominated artist at the 1st Tri-County Florida Awards where he won an award for Best Music Video in 2021. Azazus has since been creating a wave in entertainment with a new style of music he describes as Anime-Rap.
Heavily inspired by the Anime & Horror genre, he continues to push forward with making a staple of his name by self-directing his own short films and music videos. Azazus has appeared in many music festivals with other famous Artists like Talib Kweli; Ying Yang Twins; Big Freedia; Princess Nokia; and more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being an independent artist makes negotiating deals somewhat difficult when there isn’t a label or organization to bargain on your behalf. Many people will gatekeep artists from proceeding further if there isn’t a familiar name involved in the reference.
Then there also comes the challenge of keeping track of expenses on your own while also maintaining consistent product/content drops for fans. It can become expensive very quickly because you are essentially running your own business. And in the business world money needs to be spent in order to break even or make a profit.
It can become difficult as well to network with others when my mind is very business oriented but others won’t care so much about attempting to make money in certain situations. They would care more about just simply having fun when it’s very possible to enjoy yourself while also making money for your brand.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a music artist, and I create music. As of 2022, I really have been catering to melodic sounds. More so experimental songs where I have coined the genre Anime-Rap.
I am heavily inspired by the Anime, Horror, and nightlife culture. I reflect those subjects in my songs through metaphors and double entendres that I feel not many [if any artists] at all are doing. I feel visually I am known for my dreadlocks, my face masks, and sunglasses that make me appear like a living anime character.
I’m proud of the friends and fans I have developed. They are not a million people but they love me just like it was that many. I’m proud of achieving multiple social media verifications and press articles on my own no label involved. I’m very proud of all the videos girls have made worldwide to my music.
That is still amazing to me. I would have never thought I would have gotten this far if someone asked me while I was still a child. Most of all I am proud of the songs and music I have developed.
What do you think about luck?
I work very hard for what I have achieved independently. If luck was involved then I would have been way further by now. Even though where I am currently many people consider me to be famous already.
