Today we’d like to introduce you to Akhelia Gardner.
Hi Akhelia , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started one day years ago when I decided to do a hair review in my bathroom. I didn’t have any high tech equipment, just a girl and her iPhone. I posted on YouTube and my video did well. Then I took my first solo trip to Cuba and documented that. I also posted that to my YouTube channel and received many comments and a good amount of views. It sparked something in me to want to share more of what I love or what I thought people wanted to see with the world.
I took a long break and came back to it because I realized that people still enjoyed seeing me travel, especially solo. Now my content is centered around beauty, travel, and lifestyle. I’ve made content for many brands and even secured my first trip collaboration last year. Although I don’t have a large following, I’m still recognized by brands. Overall, I just enjoy sharing what I love with my audience.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It wasn’t always smooth. I had to start making investments such as buying a better camera, learning editing, and not being afraid to put myself out there. There were times when I didn’t have the money to do certain things like spend on certain products or take a trip just to keep up with the momentum I had going. My finances caused me to take a break, and that was the hardest part. It taught me how to do things on a budget.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day I’m a licensed funeral director. When I’m not doing that I’m creating content. I most proud of myself for graduating last December with my bachelor’s in criminal justice. I was working full-time while being a full time student. What sets me apart is that I’m always doing something that will bring me joy. Most times I’m doing things alone because my friends moved away and we grew apart. I take solo trips and do most of my content by myself. Most times I wish I had help.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Don’t let social media deter you because your post didn’t do well. Take that trip even if you have no one to go with. Whatever you want to do, just do it! It might feel scary at first but trust me you’ll be proud of yourself for doing it.
