Today we’d like to introduce you to Mohammed.
Mohammed, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Miami and started scribbling when I was toddler. My mom used to put frames around my scribbles on the walls and I still have my drawings on paper framed. My art was always abstract even at a young age and that style stuck with me, although I have learned to use different techniques through the years. I tried to stay away from depicting literal figures and paint thoughts and feelings instead of actual objects. Over the years my paintings have become bigger and more complicated, just like me.
I have traveled to many places but Miami has always been home. My whole theme in life as well as art has been “the world”. It applies to being a global and worldly person, aware of other cultures and people and open to traveling anywhere, as well as creating a new and individual world in every painting.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My artwork started originally with only acrylic paint because it dried faster, but lately I have incorporated other media and found objects to create more aggressive textures. I use cardboard, sponge, nails, screws, and any random objects that go with the theme or idea I am expressing. I use bright colors and red is usually the last one that I apply. I never finish a painting in one day and it evolves and progresses over time. My favorite part is applying the varnish at the end when it’s done and sealed.
My inspiration is how I am feeling at any given time. I am in general a chill person so most of my hostility is released through my art. I see each of my paintings as a Rorschach test where hopefully it will tell you more about you than about me. I hope that people walk away seeing something about themselves they didn’t see before. By coming into my world, I hope they see more of theirs.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Being an artist has nothing to do with being lonely. It’s all about how you live your life and your attitude towards people in general. I do consider creating art a solo effort, as most paintings are created on your own without much collaboration from others, but the act of creating and connecting with others are two separate things. Being an artist doesn’t mean you have to barricade yourself in a room and paint without ever talking to anyone. I enjoy solitude just as much as I love to go out. You can have it all; it’s all about balance.
While Instagram and Facebook can help to connect with other artists and creatives, the best advice I can give is to attend as many events as possible. Despite the digital age of social media, there is absolutely no substitute for genuine in person meetings and fruitful relationships. Have business cards with you at all times and talk to as many people as possible. Without genuine contact with the right people you will never get anywhere.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My artwork is available on my website WorldOfM.com and Instagram @world.of.mohammed. Any time someone views or comments on anything I am doing they are supporting me. It is also possible to arrange studio visits and request specific commissions as well. My work is often featured in group shows in Miami, although I am not currently represented by a gallery.
