Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalil Osborne.
Khalil, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started photography my sophomore year high school, so like 2013, due to my needing photos for a photoshop class. I bought a camera from one of my friends at school and started to walk around school taking photos of everyone. Soon I would be known as the guy with the camera. The year I was graduating, the friend I bought the camera from ended up ending his own life and that motivated me to take photography to the next level in his honor. Right after I graduated in 2015, I immediately began working at a photography studio and I was added to a Jacksonville collective of internet people who wanted to come together and make art. We were the first of our kind at our age so we grew quickly. We were running art shows and music shows and we were traveling with it as well. We were known as We Were Never Friends. With the help of the group, I learned how to do things on my own and I departed from the group but I kept continuing the shows and started curating my own shows. Now I am where I am now, finishing college, doing art shows and working at a photography studio.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am specifically a film photographer. I work with 35mm and medium format. I always struggle to describe my work but I usually lean towards fashion and conceptual work. I base most of my ideas off of color, scene, and emotion. I see my photos from the shot of a movie scene and I love to make my work immersive. I create large bodies of work based off of one theme and then drop all the work at one time in a book. I hint and make videos to instill themes in the minds of viewers and then drop the work to let everything come full circle. I hope people just truly pick up on the themes and let how they are feeling transcribe through the work. Look deep into the photos because I do every major task calculated.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success to me is any accomplishment or goal that you have set being completed. I am a strong believer in celebrating any victory big or small. I love to celebrate any action of doing because it is so easy to talk but so much harder to actually do. It is so important to be positive in the world of now, so yes, let’s continue to count every success and keep succeeding in the future. Positivity is the only thing you need to succeed.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Instagram is the platform I currently mainly push but I also always keep my website updated. All my social medias are @khalilosborne and my website is khalilosborne.co. I always try to have at least three shows/events a year so follow me to stay updated!
I will be releasing my next book, “Highlight” within the month of June? Scheduled for June 16th as the release date! I also currently have work being displayed at The Yellow House of Jacksonville until July 20th!
