Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Mignone.
Joe, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Ever since I was a little kid from Brooklyn, I wanted to be involved in entertainment. After taking drama in high school, I was hooked. I got my headshots done, booked gigs on TV commercials, movies and independent work with the University of Miami. I was professionally trained and eventually earned my right to join the Screen Actors Guild. So a friend of mine asked me one day if I wanted to start a podcast with him. I had no idea how to start one but I listened to shows like Joe Rogan and Don Tony and Kevin Castle, so I was a fan of the podcast world. After recording, I was like a junkie and kind of went nuts with it. I was booking local business owners on the show to get started to organically grow the show. Now I added in Skype interviews for people out of state to broaden the audience. I’ve booked Emmy Award Winners, famous comedians and professional athletes. Little by little, my hard work is paying off and I can’t wait to see who I book next! Make sure you do the right thing and subscribe to A Guy Thing Podcast!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My show is called “A Guy Thing Podcast” but it kind of evolved into something more than just guy talk. I have had the privilege of having very interesting guests on my show, both men and women. I am truly interested in people’s success stories, where they were before their success and how they got to where they are today. If I could touch or inspire one of my listeners with these success stories than I am doing something right! There is also a humorous side of the show with the “This Week in Social Media” or “This Week with Florida Man” segments! Have a listen for yourself and find out what I’m talking about!
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Finances are tough man, especially when you are trying to put yourself out there. I did the acting thing for a while and I was living about an hour from Miami (where all the auditions are). The big auditions are basically during regular business hours so if you have a full-time 9-5, you can forget about hitting up every audition. Even when you book a gig, more than likely filming will be during regular business hours. I would use my PTO and drive all the way to Miami in that crazy traffic to audition for basically anything I could get my hands on. It truly is a grind and if you’re in it to become famous than this business isn’t for you. But for anyone in general trying to make it with their work and are struggling financially, my best advice is to be creative. You must change your thinking and how you make a living in order to truly go after your dreams and passions. Anything is possible as long as you train your mind to embrace negativity and failure because that stuff will always be there on your journey to success. Just to give you an example, for every guest that I book on my show I must get told no or ignored by 15-20 other people. Who cares? Tell me no, ignore me, why should I let that bother me? Drive and determination win every single time! If it makes you feel better, this year was the most difficult year in my life. When you watch my show, I look like I am having a blast, and don’t get me wrong I truly am because in a way this show is my therapy, I love to entertain. But I’ve lost my grandmother, got divorced, lost my house, lost my job, legal battles and people I once called friends just dropping out of my circle. All while going to school full time, starting a new career path and putting in the endless hours behind the scenes to make this show happen every single week for my listeners. So yea things will get really hard sometimes, but no matter how hard it gets, don’t ever tell yourself no!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
