Today we’d like to introduce you to David Acevedo.
David, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Florida in 2000, pursuing a job with the federal government. I had just graduated with a degree in visual arts when I got the job. I started emerging myself into the local art scene of Lee County until I decided to be a bit more proactive and start a rebellion of my own. My art has always been a bit too “modern” for the area, but I managed to create a very popular art studio, which transformed into my first art gallery. Later on, I helped create the Fort Myers Art Walk – which has been one of the main trigger the process in our downtown area. Some accolades later, I had to close the first gallery amid absurd rent increases because of the same popularity we created in the area I reopened my gallery in 2016 in a different part of town and moved it back to the downtown area this year.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a self-described intuitive expressionist artist. I find restrictive methods and realistic work incredibly boring and overdone. Therefore, I search for things that catch my attention, focusing on color and textures. My compositions are usually full of symbolism, and hidden words referencing my thoughts at the moment. I am not as prolific as people consider me since I paint sporadically, yet fast. Mostly because of my lack of free time, but also because I have to feel certain vibes to produce my art. I also create other artsy things such as jewelry and fine crafts. In Lee County, I am mostly known for a series of paintings with colorful roosters and hearts.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice would be to do what you feel is right and always remembering that we are our worst critics. Do what you love and forget what others think. If you paint just to sell or be complacent to a clientele, you are just a machine.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Currently, I’m represented by HW Gallery in Naples and DAAS CO-OP in Fort Myers. I’ve shown my work in the US, Europe, and Asia.
