Art & Life with Jeane LaRance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeane LaRance.

Jeane, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been an artist my whole life with no intention of doing anything else. When I was a kid I would cut pictures out of magazines and funny papers to make flip-books to watch them move—I was fascinated with pictures. Then my brother gave me my first camera when I was nine or ten years of age, and my entire life changed I don’t remember much about the camera it was the pictures I couldn’t get enough of and I have not been without a camera since. In college, I studied the history of photography with much interest. I love the Alternative Process of photography and tried every part of the process. This is the reason for my latest work—Digital Image Transfers to Metal.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a photographer, and my love for photography has given me so much and in so many ways. I paint and sculpt too but its making pictures that I love. The work I’m doing now and most of the pieces you see on Instagram are part of my latest work. I wanted to make tintypes, but I am an environmentalist, and I will not use chemicals anymore so I have figured out a way I can make Digital Transfers to Metal without chemicals. It has taken me more than three years to get to the place with this process that I’m pleased with. I cut my own metal and mix my own solution to transfer the images to metal. I am following the same plan I had for tintypes which was to make the small tintypes and put them together to make a very large piece. Making the images for this process is a lot simpler, I think because I can take a photograph and enlarge it to the size I want, cut my metal to the size I want and make one large piece using many smaller pieces. This is the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced but if it was not a challenge I wouldn’t be doing it.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
As an artist, I define success as being able to come up with new and different ideas and follow it through. We all do the same types of art; we paint, we sculpt, we make photographs, and then we challenge ourselves with new ideas. If the art I make is not a challenge, I won’t bother with it at all. But these Digital Image Transfers to Metal is the greatest challenge of my career!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I live in Key West, FL because it is an artist community. In March I had an exhibit at SALT GALLERY, it was the first exhibit to show my new work! I had twenty Digital Image Transfers to Metal all one-size 11×14; the show remains up until the end of the month. My next exhibit will be at The Studios of Key West (TSKW), the Cultural Hub of the Keys. This exhibit will have two subjects Street Art and Angels, and the pieces will be large. I will post on Instagram as I finish them.
