Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Ramos.
Jason, was born in Villavicencio, a small city in Colombia in 1987. Ever since he was a little kid he has been involved in art. When he was 10 he started skateboarding and has never stopped till this day. When he was 13 he started playing guitar & bass for different small bands, getting recognized in his city.
“While I skateboarded and played in those different bands, I met a lot of different artists and other people who had tattoos and it intrigued me a lot.” but wasn’t till a couple years later that he got his first tattoo at 17. He had to take a trip to Bogota to look for a good rep tattoo shop/artist. The tattoo is of three stars that represent two sons and a sister going down his rib cage following with his mom’s name.
He entered the “Universidad de los llanos”. After 5 years of creativity and hard work he received his Master’s degree in Marketing & Advertising. “While I was going to school I had a full-time job being a manager at a bank & I’d work from 8am-6pm.”. While Jason was studying all those years and working at his job he was getting tattoos on his legs, thighs and back. “I had to get tattoos only in places that could be hidden from the public because where I came from my job and community didn’t accept tattoos.”
In his last year of studying in 2012 in the university, when he noticed he was ready to graduate and get his diploma and show it to his mom, he left his job at the bank to pursue his interest and passion for art. Later on, after he graduated and left his job he started an apprenticeship at a tiny tattoo shop in his city. “After one year doing tattoos in Villavicencio I noticed no one here wants and appreciates tattoos. I made a decision and told myself to go to Bogota, there’s better opportunity there since it’s the capital.” Jason worked in Bogota for a year in one of the oldest shops.
“After a year of working in Bogota, I came to the United States, I came to America with no knowledge or guarantee of work or money. I left everything behind and I came alone.” In 2014 when Jason competed in a convention called Gathering of the Giants he won two 1st place awards. That opened many doors for him in Miami and out of Florida. A year later he met the love of his life and got married. “Miami has brought me many blessings including my wife, she’s my #1 supporter and back bone.”
In Jason’s spare time he likes to draw, skateboard, watch movies with his wife and contribute his time in marketing as well.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Right now I’m doing mainly black and grey with engravement style tattoos with my own technique which is using only 1 needle for the entire process. What I hope people take away from my art is that tattoos were made to last not just for one day to take pictures.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is making a living off of art and being able to make your art work stand out from everyone else.
