Art & Life with David Vance

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Vance.

David, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I was 10 I became interested in art. Drawing, painting, etc were my pastimes.

When I was 14 I began leaning toward photography. I was mostly interested in portraiture. That developed and expanded into an interest in Fashion. I attended Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester NY where I graduated with a degree in Fine art. I opened my first studio in Coral Gables in 1970 and began my career in commercial photography shooting portraits and fashion images for editorial and advertising clients.

Since then I have been fortunate to have had a successful career shooting for a variety of national and international clients. To balance my commercial work I also began shooting fine art nudes and have published 12 coffee table books.

Today I continue with both, shooting lots of public relations portraits for people from all walks of life from celebrities to realtors and also shooting fine art nudes for my books and calendars. Lately, I have also been spending more time on my original passion, drawing and painting, still exploring all media including pencil, pastel and watercolor.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I have always had a fascination for faces and bodies with started with drawing and lead to photography and now back to drawing again. I love creating timeless images in all types of media from pencil to digital photography. I find that my knowledge of art and anatomy have been helpful in my photography work and visa versa. All of these endeavors have the same basis. They require the ability to see form and render it simply and in a classic way that will be timeless. Drawing trained my eye for photography and photography has helped me to see more clearly in terms of my drawing.

I have always, from the start been captivated by beauty in all forms and my greatest joy comes from discovering and capturing that beauty. It’s a great thrill to photograph someone in a way that shows them a view of themselves that they’ve never seen before. Capturing the beauty and seeing it where others don’t is my passion. It’s almost like an addiction. I’m compelled to do it.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think it’s always been difficult being financially successful in the art field, especially the fine art field. I don’t think that’s any different today. Being an artist is a challenge and striking a balance between creating art and making a living is difficult.

With the advent of the internet, people can readily see and appreciate art without actually buying it so real art buyers and benefactors needed more than ever.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Actually, I’m all over the internet. You can google my name and see a lot of my images. I am also on most social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

I also have a commercial website and another site where I sell books and prints. I am available for private commissions and portraits as well. contact: info@davidvance.com.
