Art & Life with christian cooley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Cooley.

Christian, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been involved in music and audio production for advertising for the last 10 years. I’ve produce several TV, radio and web ads as well as music for TV series and Film.

In 2012, I decided to create my own music project. I could tell that agencies hired my work because my sound and they really like what I do with instrumentation where I mix acoustic with electronic sounds. Therefore, I wanted to make a proper demo with its own project name and design in order to share it and expand my clientele. Such project was called ‘Leitvox’.

Originally the project was meant for demonstration purposes (to show my composition and production techniques), and I invited musicians to collaborate with voice and instruments so each track would have different talent and approach but with my same sound signature. I begin with an EP of 4 tracks and one of the collaborators was Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails Drummer) so the EP created a good reaction not only with clients but with blogs and radio stations that I sent out the tracks. Therefore, I took the project further and I decided to compose/produce more songs.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My music is electronic and it could fit within the Trip-Hop genre. I mix different vocalists and my sound is very atmospheric with a slow tempo feel. I produce and compose the songs and, in some tracks, I invite singers and musicians to participate. I really enjoy to collaborate with people, I feel that there is always a learning connection where you take a little bit of their techniques and talent and vice versa. My music project not only focuses on sound, also, the graphic design and videos are very important. In fact, I have directed a short film that I collaborated with amazing visual artists inside Leitvox.

The main reason of why I’m doing this, is because I want to share my music with people, I want them to listen to it carefully and most important to enjoy it. I’ve been doing music for the last 20 years and I know that to compose and produce music is a serious thing; it takes years to craft your own sound. In today’s music industry, generally speaking, you don’t hear hard work in compositions, the aim is to sell and consequently popular music is becoming monotonous and too simple that don’t make people to think, and that is what I want to do with my music: to make people enjoy it and think about the sounds and arranging that are not conventional; it has a purpose of why the instrumentation and form do not follow the standards of popular music.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Just to work hard on what they enjoy to do, I think that is very important. If you are a Gothic Progressive musician, try to be the best of them, if you are a saxophonist in a jazz ensemble try also be the best, don’t change your sound or style because you think that doesn’t sell. I’ve seen many amazing musicians trying so hard to fit in a style that is profitable and that usually doesn’t work and hurts music culture. If we are constant, and we try hard to do what we enjoy to do, believe me that there are always very loyal fans for all the genres and that will help not only the music industry to evolve but art in general.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
