We’re looking forward to introducing you to Anthony Humphreys. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Anthony, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I find great joy in starting my day early, waking up between 4:30 and 5:00 AM to work out for 90 minutes. Given the emotionally charged nature of my work in tissue donation, this routine helps me decompress and prepare for the day ahead. Engaging with donor families who have recently lost a loved one requires a lot of emotional resilience, and this morning practice allows me to approach each interaction with clarity and compassion. While I wasn’t always a morning person, this routine has transformed me, energizing me for the fulfilling yet challenging days in my role.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I often say my journey has taken me from fashion to forensics. After a successful career as a fashion photographer, I returned to school for forensics during the pandemic. Now, I work with Legacy Donor Services Foundation, focusing on tissue donation—a vital yet often overlooked aspect of organ donation. While many are familiar with organ donation, tissue donation plays a crucial role in enhancing and saving lives for individuals suffering from various injuries and medical conditions.
My role is uniquely focused on facilitating donation opportunities through collaboration with Medical Examiner Offices across Florida. I ensure that families who have lost a loved one, particularly in tragic circumstances where the deceased may not have made it to a hospital, are informed about their options regarding tissue donation. It’s essential that every family has the chance to consider this generous decision, even when faced with such profound grief.
Outside of my immediate responsibilities, I also participate in events organized by Legacy Donor Services Foundation and other donor programs, such as the Run 4 Life 5K Run, the Game of Life Kickball Tournament, and the Make the Save, Save a Life Donor Recognition in partnership with the St. Lucie Mets. These events help raise awareness about the importance of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor, and they allow me to connect with the community in meaningful ways.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Without a doubt, my mother has been my greatest teacher. As a single parent and an only child, I learned the value of giving back from her. She has dedicated her career to the donation industry, instilling in me the significance of helping others through donation from a young age. While I initially pursued a career in the arts, it was my mother’s encouragement that led me to explore forensics and ultimately find my way into tissue donation.
Her unwavering support and belief in my potential were pivotal during my transition to this field. I may not have followed her exact path, but her influence has deeply shaped my understanding of the importance of compassion and service in our work.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there was a challenging period when I moved back to New York City for a job opportunity that didn’t align with my true desires. I quickly realized that I missed Miami and felt unfulfilled in my photography career, which had become more about survival than passion. This struggle, compounded by the pandemic, pushed me into a place of uncertainty.
However, that difficult time became a catalyst for change. Returning to Miami without a job allowed me to reevaluate my path, ultimately leading me back to school for forensics. I am now grateful for that journey, as it has brought me to a place where I feel fulfilled both personally and professionally.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I strive to be genuine and direct, whether in my personal life or professional role. My work requires a high level of empathy, especially when engaging with donor families during their most difficult moments. I believe that authenticity fosters trust and connection, and I aim to embody that in all my interactions.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Many people may not fully grasp the profound impact of kindness and tolerance. In our world, we often build barriers based on differences—be it race, sexuality, or background. I believe we must work towards understanding and accepting those who differ from us. Empathy and compassion can bridge these divides and create a more harmonious society. I envision a world where love and understanding prevail over division, and I strive to embody that vision in my work and interactions.
