Romi Myers shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Romi, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I meditate and do breathing exercises for 30-60 minutes every morning. Non negotiable. I find myself completely discombobulated, if I don’t.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Romi Myers. Under “mundo da romi” (Portuguese for “Romi’s world”), I now call Miami, FL home. A self-proclaimed recovering corporate burnout, I began pursuing my artist career on a full time basis in 2021. By 2023, I cofounded JDR Atelier with two other Miami based artists (Jessica de Vreeze and Daniel Marin), where our decentralized artist collective model embraces Miami local talent while exploring how technology and innovation can empower emerging artists to grow successfully. In 2024, I was also invited to become an artist member with Wynwood Kollective, located in the world renowned Wynwood Art District, where I get to experiment with other fun, art related creations that helps me grow my art brand presence.
Since embarking on my artist journey in 2021, I have continued to evolve “My Emojions” series, a collection of 222 art pieces that explore the intersection between emotions and the ubiquitous emoji, as a means to capture the essence of modern day society in a playful and lighthearted way. I am very excited to announce I will be participating at Spectrum Miami 2025 for a fourth consecutive year. [December 03-07, 2025, Booth 903].
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
What a great question! My 22 years of corporate design experience has more than served its purpose, but truth be told, I am still working on letting go of the “emotional baggage” associated with it. What many fail to mention and may perhaps, be too embarrassed to talk about it, is that workplace PTSD does, in fact, exist. So despite some of the hardship I may have experienced throughout the 2+ decades under my former female designer + creative leadership roles, I am still beyond grateful for having gone through what I have gone through. It is made me far more resilient than I could have ever imagined. Like the old saying goes, “if it doesn’t kill, it’ll make you stronger”.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’ve learned that suffering is instrumental for one’s spiritual growth, specially when we don’t listen to our heart and soul. It is the universe communicating and guiding us with any needed course correction. Success is the reward for learning how to overcome the struggles that cause the suffering.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I don’t believe the concept of, “real you” really exists. It is a mere human construct that can be misinterpreted depending on who is asked, at any specific moment in time. Those who really know me, know me because the level of trust is there. I am not the type of individual who feels the need to over share everything in my life with the general public. Some things are meant to be private for a reason. But as far as authenticity goes, I am 100% who I am, regardless of public or private settings. Some folks will like me, and some folks won’t. And that is OK by me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I did what I was told to do for 22 years, and it burned me out to the inner most core of my soul. But today I can say YES, I AM doing what I was born to do. So retirement isn’t even a topic of discussion since being an artist is no longer a hobby, but a way of life for me.
