An Inspired Chat with Paul Hoyle of Kendall

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Paul Hoyle. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Paul, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Nowadays, the first 90 minutes of my day, after preparing breakfast for my wife of 44 years, look like this: I go jogging and then have a full hour of practicing classical piano and improvisation.

I never had the time before to dedicate myself to classical piano, and I feel it really grounds me for the rest of the day.

After that, I start taking care of business, checking my calendar for sessions and song projects that I need to finish.

I feel very blessed that at this point of my life, I can finally have the freedom to start my day like this.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Paul Hoyle, I was born in Lima, Peru. I went to Boston in 1980 to study at Berklee College of Music to create a music career that combines my background in electrical engineering with my love for music production.
Graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1983.

Since then I have been making a living writing, producing and mixing songs for recording artists, and placing song in the international music market.
I have been involved in over 80 albums for Sony, Universal, Warner record labels. (Shakira, Julio Iglesias, Jon Secada, Menudo, Basilio, Albita).

Some placements for HBO, Disney, Univision, Amazon Prime, Nickelodeon, Netflix:

“Jack Ryan” (Prime), “The Horror of Dolores Roach” (Prime), “Gordita Chronicles” (HBO),
“Bardo” (Netflix), “Our Brand Is Crisis” (Sandra Bullock), “Love and Debate”(Movie), “Claws”(HBO),
“Corte Tropical”(Univision).

I am a pianist and session vocalist.
One of my favorite things to do at the studio is to record and produce vocals.
To hear the best performance from the artist is a real thrill. I feel that only when the artist I am producing is successful, I am successful.

Right now I am developing up and coming new artists, coaching them on their songs, and co-writing with them.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Growing up in Lima, Peru, the option of making a living in the music industry did not exist.

I was a good engineering student, Dean’s list at the College, and I thought that that was my destiny: To be an electrical engineer.

I loved technology, but I also loved music. I had a rock band in Lima, we had a record deal with EMI label, but still, that felt like a hobby, not a career.

Until one day I met a musician that was able to graduate from Berklee. He came back to Peru, and started a production business. Then I realized that I could combine both of my passions into a very different career: Music Production and Engineering.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could talk to my younger self, I would tell him that everything happens for reason, and that when you make the right choices, everything at the end comes out great,

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I always admired Albert Einstein, and I use one of his quotes every day: “Imagination is more important than knowledge”.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had only 10 years left, I wouldn’t change anything that I do now: I spend quality time with my wife every single moment that I have, I share my experience and values with my kids, teach Spanish and music to my grandkids, and especially laugh a lot with all of them!
