We recently had the chance to connect with Julia Speedy and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Yoga—I love the combination of exercise and meditation. I just always feel so good during a class and after a class.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi I’m Julia and I love to make art: mainly 2D realism, abstract, and cartoon art. I’ve been making art ever since I was a little girl and it has always been the perfect way for me to express what I couldn’t with words.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Honestly I think when I first got recognized and praised for being able to make good drawings when I was just a young girl in school using crayons and colored pencils for the first time!
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Yes, there was a night when there was such chaos at home and I needed to escape. Thankfully, a good friend of mine at the time allowed me to sleepover at her home so I took a little retreat there and I vented all about the situation and she was angel to listen and provide space for me.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Ariana Grande—I know she’s mega famous and she is truly gifted but I love her for who she is as well as her creative and authentic expression.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That it was easy, and that I was always happy. I try to keep a positive attitude most of the time but there have been lots of struggles and pain that I’ve endured that most people don’t know about.
