Flor Mireles shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Flor, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating—and I mean that in so many different ways. Whether it’s in writing, making music, embroidering, painting, scrapbooking, cooking—anything creative—I know I will lose track of time and find myself again. For me, creativity is a form of self-discovery as well as a form of expression, and I love that there is no one way to do it. There are so many ways to get creative and reconnect with that inner child within that allows you to look at the world a little brighter.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am author, singer, and typewriter poet. I have written and published seven books, including the award-winning poetry collection A Moth Fell In Love With The Moon and the novel Amanita. I am also the founder of Indie Earth Publishing, a hybrid publishing company that focuses on giving authors the creative freedom to publish their way and the founder of Energy in Poetry, where I work various types of events with my typewriter, channeling energy to provide poems of affirmation, abundance and confirmation for recipients that are 100% tailored to the receiving individual.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me the most about work. Since 2008, when I was just 10 years old, my dad started his own company and growing up I just had so much admiration for him starting something his own thing, making a living from it, and being his own boss. It was so inspiring. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to follow in that, and so I started making my own little businesses since I was 16—first, selling custom Minnie ears, then creating my own publishing house and now writing poetry on the spot for people at events through energy channeling. There’s no such feeling as being able to make your way through the world knowing that you’re following your heart, doing what you love, and being able to have that be your actual job. It’s truly a blessing, and I honestly have my dad to thank for that, for instilling that in me so young.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be to continue moving in authenticity and with enormous heart. I would tell her to listen to her heart more than the words of others and to not be afraid to be herself, for she is such a vibrant force and ray of sunshine. As we grow older, it’s easy to overthink and do what others say rather than what we want. It can be challenging to overcome the people-pleasing if it’s in how you were raised, but there is truly nothing as satisfying as being 100% yourself and being loved for it or even admired. I know my younger self would be proud of how much I’ve grown and how much I’ve returned to her despite life’s hardships.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
In doing energy readings for people on my typewriter through poetry, I eventually meet skeptics—and I get it. Energy isn’t something you always see, but I believe in it immensely. There have been so many times when I have been able to channel an energy poem for someone and I can see it in their face that they’re shocked at how much truth it holds despite me being a total stranger to them. I remember once that I kept channeling the energy of a baby for a woman I was writing a poem for once, and she began to cry when she read the poem, confessing to me that she was finally pregnant and it had only been three weeks since she learned about it. She was so happy and in awe of how I managed to know that without being told—and I was in awe, too, of this gift bestowed upon me. I don’t fully understand it, but being able to hear what I’m supposed to write for people when I sit with my typewriter is a blessing I’m grateful I get to share with the world.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
For a long time, I feel like I was doing what I was told to do—but not anymore. I feel that, in 2021, I began to step into my role as a creative, accepting it in all its different ways. Today, I would say I am doing what I was born to do: inspire and uplift people through words, music, connection, and creativity, and for that I’m so grateful. It’s hard to follow your dreams, but it’s also possible—which is something I want everyone to really grasp. I have been able to make many of my dreams come true through tenacity, discipline, and heart, and I know others can do the same. Dreams don’t come true overnight, but with a little bit of dedication, you can go a long way, and there’s nothing like feeling like you’re following your purpose and doing what you were born to do.
