An Inspired Chat with Erica porter of South Miami

We recently had the chance to connect with Erica porter and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
Everyone and everything. But more than anyone, I’m learning from my son. Motherhood has been the most humbling and expansive journey of my life. It’s taught me patience, resilience, and self-reflection, while also pushing me to explore new parts of myself—including my faith. I’m growing every day, right alongside him.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a second-generation salon owner, proudly running Myra & Company, a beauty and wellness staple in South Miami for over 47 years. What makes us unique isn’t just our longevity—it’s the heart behind the work. Several of my team members and I have been together for more than 25 years, creating a true sense of family and consistency our guests can feel. At the same time, we’re always evolving, welcoming fresh talent and new energy into our space each year. From scalp to toes, everything we do is rooted in care, connection, and creativity.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
In my own life, past challenges have taught me resilience and the importance of keeping communication open, even when it’s hard. Those lessons made me someone who values trust, collaboration, and creating spaces where people feel seen and understood.”

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, most recently at the beginning of my master’s program in 2023. After orientation, I seriously questioned whether I belonged there. I felt overwhelmed and convinced I was in over my head. But I pushed through the doubt, stayed committed, and ended up receiving the highest grade in the program on our very first assignment. That moment reminded me that growth often starts right outside our comfort zone—and that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. Some might say I’m a little too real at work—but I think that’s exactly what people appreciate about me. I’m honest, straightforward, and I genuinely care. I’m not going to sell you something I wouldn’t use or love myself, and I’m definitely not going to let you walk out with something that doesn’t suit you. What you see is what you get—and I think that builds real trust.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Without a doubt—my attentiveness. I’m known for offering practically 24/7 customer service. Whether it’s answering a late-night text, fitting someone in last minute, or following up to make sure everything went perfectly, I’m always tuned in. My guests know they’re genuinely cared for, and I think they’d miss that personal connection the most.
