An Inspired Chat with Diana Lozano of Downtown

Diana Lozano shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Diana, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
Absolutely, I actually lost a long-term client over it.

For five years, I produced entertainment for a top-tier hotel. When new management asked about aerial performers, I explained that rigging and specialized skills make it far more expensive than ground-based acts. They said, “Just put a model on a swing.” Fine, I arranged it.

Then I showed up. No swing. Instead, a lyra dangling 20 feet from a sprinkler pipe. Their “plan” was for the model to climb a ladder, balance on a pool noodle they’d laid across the hoop, and just… sit there. No safety gear. No plan for getting down. Totally insane.

I told them no. The model was game, but I wasn’t risking her life. If that sprinkler pipe can’t hold a car, it definitely shouldn’t hold a person. They called me a “stupid fucking bitch” to my face. I lost the contract, but I still paid my performer. Safety and integrity always come first.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Diana Lozano, founder and creative producer of CircX, a Miami-based performance troupe and production company creating bold, cutting-edge immersive entertainment since 2002. We combine theatrical circus artistry, interactive antics, contemporary dance, corporeal mime, European clowning, magic, and burlesque to craft performances that are wild, intense, and unapologetically audacious.

Born from street theater and nightlife, CircX has evolved to collaborate with major brands like Red Bull and Shaq’s Fun House, as well as Fortune 500 companies, theaters, and international festivals. We combine cutting-edge immersive technology with innovative production design to push creative boundaries and deliver unforgettable experiences.

I hold an MFA from CalArts and have extensive training in physical theatre, clowning, and mask work. I also taught at New World School of the Arts for nearly two decades, developing courses in improvisation, movement, and self-expression.

At CircX, we blend artistry, professionalism, and audacity to produce indelible experiences.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Honestly, I don’t think I ever listened. I’ve always been the outcast, the black sheep, still dancing to my own off beat. Sometimes I wonder, what if? What if I had a 9 to 5, kids, and did all the things most women are expected to do? But that life just doesn’t appeal to me.

I thrive in different spaces, where I can be bold, creative, and fiercely authentic. I’m drawn to the edges, the unexpected, the provocative corners most people avoid.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
That’s the thing about growing up in the theater. From the get, you discover how to use pain for creation. It becomes part of the process: a catalyst, a tool to shape chaos into meaning. You learn to transform what hurts into something that connects with others and resonates.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
No! To be fair, the real me often eludes me on the daily. But what I will say is, when I’m out in public, most people probably see me as this outlandish extrovert ( usually playing some over-the-top character and piercing people’s personal space.)

The truth? 95% of the time, I’m happiest in solitude.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Must be what I was born to do, because I’ve spent my life rejecting what I was supposed to.

However, thanks to doomscrolling on TikTok, it has come to my attention that my ‘quirky personality’ might actually be a mild mental illness. But hey, it’s paid off: the right clients have found me, and I get to turn wild, offbeat ideas into visionary entertainment.
