We recently had the chance to connect with Alex Cirilo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
These days, I find joy in spending time with my 16-year-old son. Moving gave me the chance to be more present and enjoy the simple moments. My wife’s energy and positivity keep me grounded, and our dogs bring a calm only they can—their steady, unconditional love keeps everything in perspective.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Alex Cirilo—mixing and recording engineer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and founder of Orbita Muzic. Originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, my career bridges both the music and television industries, with credits that include collaborations with Juan Luis Guerra, Daddy Yankee, Lunay, Brytiago, and Marc Anthony, as well as global broadcasts such as the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and Super Bowl for NBC. Over the years, I’ve been honored with five Emmy Awards, twenty-six PromaxBDA Latin American Awards, six New York Festival Awards, and six Telly Awards.
Today, my focus is on advancing immersive audio through Dolby Atmos—crafting mixes that bring depth, clarity, and multidimensional energy to every sound. For me, it’s about pushing beyond stereo—to create experiences that truly surround, move, and connect with the listener.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I come from a family where my father—a Vietnam veteran—instilled in me from an early age the values of punctuality, responsibility, and hard work. He was, and still is, a very prominent presence in my life, even after his passing. His discipline and integrity continue to guide everything I do, both personally and professionally.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
A few years ago, I faced one of the biggest fears anyone can experience—the moment I was told I had cancer. Thankfully, it was caught early, but when you first hear those words, your mind races. You think about everything you still want to do, what you’ve yet to accomplish, and most of all, about your wife, your son, and what truly matters. For several months, I was completely out of commission—unable to focus on work or even create. My energy and attention shifted entirely toward healing and getting better.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In both the music and the television industry, where I’ve spent many years, people often say that success comes from talent and discipline. And while those are essential, I’ve learned that what many call luck is really about opportunity—being prepared when the right door opens. It’s that moment when someone takes a chance on you, and you’re ready to deliver. Someone gives you a chance, and your work proves why you deserved it. That’s the real kind of luck that shapes a career.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop worrying so much about the future, the business, and the past. None of that really matters in the end. I’d focus instead on making sure that when I’m no longer here, my loved ones are cared for and never left without what they need. That’s where my peace would come from.
