An Inspired Chat with Alectric of Fort Lauderdale

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alectric. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Alectric, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Oh wow, I don’t think I even know what a “normal day” means or should mean anymore haha. I’m sure basically every creative can attest when I say that our day to days are pretty inconsistent. Good luck trying to establish a habit while you’re at it. For me, basically every day since I started DJing and producing full time, there has been something new that needs to get done. Whether it’s working on a new track, traveling for shows, editing set footage, spending time with family, etc. it is almost never the same the following day. The past 2 months however, I’ve been pushing myself harder than I ever have before to establish a consistent habit of working and finishing songs that I can release. I live a very minimalistic lifestyle. I usually wake up, walk my dog Jasper, eat breakfast, then immediately sit down at the studio and start working on music. Usually there seems to be a million other things I have to do as well that are minuscule on my priority list. Once I sit down at my studio though and start working on music, I could literally sit there for 12 hours straight. The only reason I really stop is if I have to walk my dog Jasper or I have to DJ a show. But on the days I do have to DJ, I do literally the same thing except stop working on music at like 10pm. A thrilling lifestyle indeed.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
So for those who haven’t read the last interview I’ve done with Voyage, I’m Alex. Most people just call me by my DJ name “Alectric”, like in the word electricity. I’m a local DJ and producer in the South Florida area. Most people know me from the times I DJ in clubs in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, WPB, etc. I think I may have said it in our last interview but I definitely think my musical inclination is what sets me apart and makes me unique. It’s still occasionally shaky, but I’ve been really gaining confidence in my music and confidence in how it’s actually something that deserves to be heard. I’m peeking over the wall of my own self-imposed limitations and I genuinely think I’m starting to tell myself, “there is someone out there right now that wants to hear this. you can change or move or affect somebody in a positive way with this.” I also think that the pure passion and love I have for the art of music is what separates me too. That’s definitely one thing I want people to know about me. If forced one or the other, most people would choose to be blind rather than deaf. Not me, music is engrained in my being. I also have bad vision to begin with. In terms of what I’m working on, I have A LOT of music ready with a lot of really great artists. I also just released an amazing track called, “In The Sky” on Angry Dog Records that I’m really happy with.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Hmm. What part of me has served it’s purpose and has to go? The limiting part of myself. Growing up as a kid I was always timid. I was always shy, never really concretely confident. I was always overly conscious of what I believed others to view me as, of what they thought of me. I was always a people pleaser, a person who was overly kind to those who did not deserve it from me. My frontal lobe clearly developed because I literally don’t care about any of that stuff anymore. Those who don’t deserve my kindness? They don’t get it. Those who disrespect my respect? Don’t get my respect. The limiting part of myself was choosing the wrong target audience to base my decisions around. Today I choose the freeing option. Relying on myself and my internal reflection to make decisions, and the support of those who genuinely support me and appreciate who I am and what I do.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Oh definitely! I wouldn’t preferably say something but rather someone. I honestly really miss my childhood best friend Collin from back home in Maryland. If I really ponder on it, I think almost every single friendship I’ve had has had some kind of argument or negative experience or some hitch in the friendship. Except with my friend Collin. I genuinely don’t think I had a single negative experience with Collin. I don’t even think we argued ever. He and I started being friends in like 1st grade and were really close until I moved to Florida for school. I remember him and I sitting in his garage playing music until like 4am some nights. If there was anyone on the planet who I truly believed shared the same love of music as me it’d be Collin.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
One recent thing I’ve been getting some backlash on from some of my peers on recently is just a little perspective I have. You should not put yourself into a position near or with somebody else that isn’t where YOU want to be in life. I honestly don’t know why some of my peers don’t agree on this truth of mine to be honest. They’ll be like, “You should try to do this here and do that there at that place…” and what not but I just sit and really objectively think hard about that position and that time and that place. I really sit and imagine what it entails. Like if I look at the people in direct correlation with that position/time/place and they aren’t doing what I want to be doing, or they aren’t who I want to be, then why would I want to do “this here and that there at that place”?

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Without a doubt when I am sitting at my desk working on music. Oh wow, I’ve been waiting for this question. I am literally so enthralled with the art of music that sometimes I will just make a chord progression and play piano notes to that chord progression for HOURS. A lot of times I’ll get really emotional too when I’m listening to the notes. Music just moves me so much it’s indescribable. I’d say almost every time I work on music 10 hours will go by in a blink of an eye too. It’s weird.
