We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alfred Hernandez. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Alfred, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately I have been spending more time with my daughter during her summer break. I have been teaching her tennis and it has been a lot of fun spending this one on one time with her. She is 9 years old now, so for me I am enjoying every minute of it because it is fleeting.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Alfred Hernandez and my company is Alema Art. I am an independent artist who has created a company that specializes in nostalgic designs. I grew up in the 80’s and I loved watching t.v. and going to the movies. That is one way I learned to speak english. My family immigrated from Cuba escaping Communism. Right now I have my designs selling mostly on t-shirts in Amazon, Walmart, Teepublic, Redbubble, and Etsy.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My art teacher in High School. I attended the H.S. of Art and Design in New York City. I had 2 teachers, Mr Greenberg and Mr. Ginsburg. They both believed in my talent and helped shape it. As any teenager, I had doubts if I was good enough. I was always comparing myself to great artists and casting doubt. They showed me to develop my own style and to keep practicing.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
My fear is probably the most common one there is. That is of failure. You start setting up scenarios in your mind. “What if I do this and it doesn’t work?” ” What if no one likes my artwork or design?” “What would happen if I leave my company job to go on my own and I get no clients, sell my designs?” I am sure all of these have run through every struggling artists and entrepreneur. Today, sometimes these thoughts do creep in once in a while and you have to fight it. It is not easy, if feels like going against your instincts of comfort.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
My public persona is the same as me in private. I try to stay grounded, funny and humble. Humility is a big deal for me and one that I try to instill on my daughter. I don’t like fake or phony people who pretend to live a great life but deep down they are miserable. Be yourself, try to find happiness in life. Life is beautiful.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want people to remember me as a funny, caring person. One with a good heart that loved life and took pleasures in the little things. Spending time with my wife and my daughter. Showing my daughter my passions of drawing and sports. Showing her the beauty of this world and giving her the love for travel to see different places and cultures.
