Abib Rodney of Fort Lauderdale on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Abib Rodney. Check out our conversation below.

Abib, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now, a typical day for me is a dynamic mix of learning, collaboration, and creativity. As an Inside Sales Engineer at Commvault, I’m currently in enablement, which means I’m actively training and shadowing meetings to sharpen my technical knowledge. I spend a good portion of my day checking emails, joining calls, and assisting with live demos for clients. I also help map out their current IT environments and design future-state diagrams that align with their business continuity and disaster recovery goals. It’s all about helping them find the right backup solution whether that’s on-prem, in the cloud, or somewhere in between.

Outside of my technical role, I also serve as the Creative Director at LxVE LLC, where I oversee visual storytelling and content direction. Even during a packed sales engineering day, I’ll often pivot to review footage, storyboard a new project, or collaborate with our team on upcoming campaigns and events. It’s a balance that keeps me sharp, solving technical problems on one side and creating meaningful visual experiences on the other.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Abib Rodney also known as Abib Jahleel, I’m an Inside Sales Engineer at Commvault by day, and a Creative Director, filmmaker, and community builder by passion. I’m proud of my Jamaican heritage and deeply involved in the global Black creative community. I work at the intersection of tech and culture, blending my background in IT with my commitment to storytelling and empowerment.

Through my brand, LxVE LLC with my business partners Alfred Nomad, Jonathan Tease, and Gregg Brown, I create experiences that center love, value, and purpose producing events, short films, and digital content that reflect the richness of the African Diaspora. I’ve led filmmaking workshops with organizations like Societies of Unity and Creative World Digital Art Space, mentoring young artists. Recently, I’ve been working with True Culture University, teaching Afrofuturism and AI-powered filmmaking to university students in Ethiopia. Whether I’m helping companies protect their data or helping young creatives tell their stories, my goal is always the same: to uplift and connect.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful was in the 5th grade when I won my school’s spelling bee. I remember stepping up to the mic in front of a packed auditorium, nervous at first, but the moment I spoke, something shifted. That experience gave me a real sense of voice and presence and it was the first time I realized the power of words and how commanding a room could start with just one word spoken clearly and confidently.

Another defining moment came even earlier, growing up in a Rastafarian household. My parents had an image of Emperor Haile Selassie on the wall, and as a child, I would stare at it constantly. Seeing a powerful Black man, an emperor draped in royal garments, ruling a sovereign African nation, reminded me daily of my own potential. It shaped how I saw myself and my future. Those two moments, touching the mic and seeing that portrait anchored my belief in the power of identity, heritage, and expression.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Love yourself fully, and keep going. Everything you’re searching for is already inside you.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that integrity is everything to me. They’d tell you I move with purpose and that I care deeply about my family, my community, and my people. I’m always thinking about how my actions impact those around me and how I can uplift others while staying true to who I am. But nothing matters to me more than my son Jahleel.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m near the water, there’s something about the rhythm and stillness that grounds me. Pair that with doing something creative, and I’m fully in my element. Whether I’m editing a film, building out a new idea for a community project, or even solving a problem in IT, that creative flow brings me calm and clarity. Creativity isn’t just art, it’s how I navigate business, technology, and life.
