Exploring Life & Business with Suncica (Sunny) of Denteast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suncica (Sunny).

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Dr. Suncica Martinasevic, known as Dr Sunny to my patients and I am the sole owner and founder of Denteast Boutique Dental Practice in Fort Lauderdale.

Denteast is the practice I built from the ground up as a startup in 2025. I have been practicing dentistry in the United States for over 13 years as a foreign-trained dentist originally from Serbia, and I am proud to lead Denteast as a woman entrepreneur shaped by both clinical experience and resilience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Admission to U.S. dental schools is highly competitive overall, and for foreign-trained, non-native English speakers, the process is even more selective.

At one point, I remember feeling deeply discouraged when I learned that nearly 7,000 applicants from around the world were competing for a program that ultimately accepted only 20 students. A mentor reminded me of something simple but powerful: despite the odds, those 20 seats would still be filled, and someone had to earn them. I focused on preparation and stayed committed to the process. Ultimately, I was listed within the 20 on the admissions dean’s list of accepted candidates at NOVA Southeastern University in South Florida- proof that consistent effort and focus matter, even in the most competitive settings.

Before opening my own practice, I spent years working as an associate dentist throughout South Florida, practicing everywhere from Boca Raton to Pembroke Pines. That time was invaluable- it sharpened my clinical skills, increased my efficiency, and exposed me to a wide range of practice styles, patient needs, and clinical challenges. While that period was critical to my growth and clinical experience, it also came with limitations. As an associate, key decisions such as materials used, treatment philosophies, staffing, and scheduling were often outside of my control. Over time, as my skills and confidence grew, it became clear that practicing dentistry at the level I envisioned required ownership and accountability.

Becoming a practice owner was not just a professional milestone, but a natural evolution toward having the autonomy to make thoughtful decisions that align with patient care, quality, and long-term outcomes. I invested heavily in continuing education, traveling across the United States to refine my approach and stay current with evolving techniques and technology.

After becoming a mother and once my child moved beyond the earliest years, I made the intentional decision to open my own practice. I knew that with my son in school, I could fully commit the time, focus, and energy required to build something of my own, and step into entrepreneurship with clarity and purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Denteast was created from a simple belief: dentistry can be done better, and people deserve to be treated like people.

Denteast is a boutique, design-forward dental practice I founded and built in Fort Lauderdale (Flagler Village / Las Olas area). From the start, it was never meant to be a “volume dentistry” office- it was created as a thoughtful, elevated alternative where dentistry is done carefully, intentionally, and with personality.

The name itself reflects the idea of new beginnings, sunrise, and optimism- which aligns perfectly with Dr. Sunny, the east coast, and my belief that dentistry can genuinely change how people feel about themselves.

Branding was a strategic decision and a core component of building Denteast as a differentiated practice. I partnered with Designer & Gentleman to translate my vision into a cohesive brand infrastructure that aligns environment, patient experience, and clinical philosophy. From visual identity to sensory elements, every detail was designed intentionally to support consistency, trust, and long-term brand recognition, ensuring that how the practice looks and feels reinforces the quality of care delivered.

Patients often remark the moment they walk in on how beautiful the space feels and how intentionally the environment was designed-even noticing details like our signature scent!

At Denteast, our approach is rooted in biomimetic dentistry. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on restoring teeth in a way that mimics their natural structure and function, and in our everyday practice, we use these principles to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible while creating durable, natural-looking restorations. This philosophy naturally extends into our Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign is a significant part of our practice at Denteast, as it allows us to improve tooth alignment and occlusion in a conservative way while also considering broader functional factors, including jaw position and airway support. As a Molis-trained dentist, I have developed a deep understanding of orthodontic principles, and clear aligner therapy has become both a clinical strength and a personal passion.

In addition to cosmetic and orthodontic care, we provide a full scope of general dentistry- allowing us to care for patients comprehensively and thoughtfully under one roof.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Modern, but grounded in fundamentals and care for people and community

We embrace new technologies and evolving techniques, but they are always built on a strong foundation of core dental principles-biology, occlusion, function, and long-term stability. Much like classically trained artists who spend years studying human anatomy and technique before developing their own style, we believe true innovation only works when the basics are mastered first. Trends may evolve, but sound fundamentals ensure that the work remains functional, ethical, and lasting.

Denteast isn’t about being the biggest practice. It’s about being the one patients trust- and come back to.

On another note, we are surrounded by many businesses – we try contribute meaningfully to the ecosystem we’re part of- both inside and outside the dental office.
Over the years, patients have come to me not only for dental care, but also for guidance. Questions like:
“Can I drink red wine after this procedure?”
“Which gym do you go to?”
“Where do you go for healthy lunch around here?”

These conversations revealed something important: people see their doctor as a trusted authority in lifestyle, wellness, and decision-making not just healthcare. That insight inspired one of our proudest initiatives: ‘Dr. Sunny Recommends”

Through this platform, we thoughtfully introduce local businesses and professionals that we personally use, deeply trust, and love. From pet shops, coffee places, restaurants, to wellness experts, creatives, and specialists across different fields- every recommendation is rooted in real experience and the highest standards of quality.

This is our way of:
Supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs
Elevating great minds and high-quality craftsmanship
Strengthening the Fort Lauderdale community
Creating meaningful, human connections beyond transactions

We believe great brands grow together.
