Yanelis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, I watched my mother struggle to navigate Medicaid and disability benefits here in Florida. The process was confusing, overwhelming, and at times discouraging. Seeing how difficult it was for her to access the help she needed left a lasting impact on me. I made a promise to myself early on: I would dedicate my life to helping people avoid that same frustration.
That promise led me into the insurance industry.
Over the years, I realized that helping someone with health insurance or life insurance isn’t just about enrolling them in a plan. It’s about education. It’s about clarity. It’s about walking someone through complex options and helping them understand what coverage actually means for their family, their health, and their financial future.
In Florida especially, insurance can feel complicated; from ACA Marketplace plans to private health insurance, Medicare options, and life insurance policies. Many people simply need someone who will slow things down, explain the differences, and help them feel confident in their decision.
That’s why I founded SFLA Insurance.
Starting my own agency allowed me to build something centered on honesty, accessibility, and long-term relationships. My clients aren’t policy numbers, they become like family. My goal is simple: make insurance easier to understand, easier to access, and less intimidating for families and individuals across Florida.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
Insurance is an industry built on regulations, constant policy updates, and public misconceptions. One of the biggest challenges has been overcoming the distrust many people feel toward insurance companies. Too many people have had bad experiences or felt rushed into decisions without fully understanding their coverage.
Another challenge was starting my own company. Building an independent insurance agency in Florida means earning trust from scratch. It means educating clients consistently, staying ahead of regulatory changes, and competing with large national brands that have massive advertising budgets.
But every challenge reinforced why I started.
When someone calls overwhelmed because they don’t understand their health insurance options, or worried about protecting their family with life insurance, I see my younger self sitting at the kitchen table watching my mom try to figure things out alone. That perspective keeps me grounded.
The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful.

While insurance can feel overwhelming, our role is to simplify it.
