Inspiring Conversations with Ruben Gutierrez of Errez Design / Maison Mischief

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Gutierrez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I wanted a career in design. From an early age, I was drawn to how spaces shape the way we feel, gather, and live. That passion led me to begin my career in architecture, where I developed a strong foundation in structure, proportion, and the discipline of building. Over time, I discovered a deep love for luxury residential projects — spaces where craftsmanship, materiality, and storytelling could come together in a more intimate and expressive way.

As I transitioned into interior design, what became clear was that my work wasn’t about following trends. It was about uncovering identity. That realization led to what we now call Biographical Interior Design at Errez Design — a philosophy rooted in creating homes that reflect who our clients truly are, not just what’s popular at the moment.

In the early years, I focused on honing my craft and building trust one client at a time. As our projects grew in scale and recognition, we leaned into color, layered materials, and bold storytelling in a way that felt both elevated and deeply personal. Miami, with its vibrancy and cultural richness, became the perfect backdrop for that evolution.

Today, Errez Design is a full-service luxury interior design studio known for expressive, highly personalized homes. That same spirit has expanded into Maison Mischief, our retail concept born from the belief that everyone deserves access to joy, color, and beautifully curated pieces that feel collected rather than cookie-cutter.

Looking back, the journey has always been guided by one core belief: design should never be beige in spirit. It should tell a story. And we’re just getting started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most worthwhile endeavors, the journey hasn’t been perfectly smooth — but the challenges have been some of my greatest teachers.

I can clearly remember a few defining moments that truly stretched me. Completing my first project overseas was a turning point. It required navigating unfamiliar systems, new vendors, different construction methods, and cultural nuances in design. It pushed me to think more globally and adapt quickly. That experience expanded not only my skill set, but my confidence.

More recently, opening our retail concept, Maison Mischief, has been an entirely different kind of growth. Building a storefront from the ground up — developing collections, refining branding, managing inventory, and creating an immersive experience — has been an exercise in stretching my capacity as both a designer and a business owner. It challenged me to think beyond projects and into product, community, and long-term vision.

Each challenge has reinforced something important: growth requires discomfort. But it also builds clarity, resilience, and strength.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the heart of everything we do is storytelling.

Errez Design is a full-service luxury interior design studio specializing in high-end residential projects. We are known for what we call Biographical Interior Design — a deeply personal approach that goes beyond aesthetics. We don’t design based on trends. We design based on identity. Every home we create reflects the client’s history, lifestyle, aspirations, and personality.

We are particularly known for our fearless use of color, layered materials, custom detailing, and curated moments that feel collected rather than decorated. Our background in architecture allows us to approach projects holistically — from spatial planning and millwork to furnishings and final styling. What sets us apart is that our spaces feel intentional and emotionally connected. They tell a story. They feel lived in, elevated, and authentic.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we have stayed true to our voice. In a world that often leans neutral and safe, we have embraced expression and individuality — and that has become our signature.

Maison Mischief is the natural extension of that philosophy. It is our retail concept born from the belief that design should be joyful and accessible. While Errez creates fully tailored homes, Maison Mischief allows people to bring that same spirit into their lives through curated collections of furniture, lighting, art, and objects.

Maison is playful, colorful, and a bit rebellious — built around the idea of “color outside the beige.” We’ve developed distinct collections that each tell their own story, from bold and dramatic to tropical and whimsical. What sets Maison apart is that it isn’t just a store. It’s an experience. It’s layered, immersive, and intentionally curated to feel discovered rather than mass-produced.

Together, Errez Design and Maison Mischief represent two sides of the same philosophy: design should reflect who you are. It should evoke emotion. It should feel intentional. And above all, it should never be generic.

What I want readers to know is this — whether we are designing an entire residence or helping someone select a single piece, the goal is the same: to create spaces that feel personal, expressive, and unapologetically alive.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was definitely an old soul. While other kids were focused on sports or typical hobbies, I was completely fascinated by art, architecture, and design. I was observant, imaginative, and always thinking about how things could be arranged or improved.

Some of my favorite memories are late nights in my room sketching floor plans and house elevations. I would design entire neighborhoods — not just individual homes, but full communities with amenities, layout concepts, and cohesive styles. I wasn’t just drawing houses; I was imagining how people would live in them.

I’ve always been deeply drawn to beauty, structure, and storytelling through space. Even as a child, I understood that environments influence how we feel. That curiosity never really left me — it just evolved.

Looking back, it makes perfect sense that I became both an architect and a designer. I wasn’t choosing a career later in life. I was continuing something I had already been doing since I was young.
