Inspiring Conversations with Jose Rivero of The Fish House, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Rivero.

Jose, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We opened on January 8, 1996. We serve fresh fish not fancy in a nautical atmosphere, delicious plates . We serve music because we bring the culture of Jazz and Blues to the community. We support the local schools through The Backroomlive, a place where music students are invited to Jam with our paid Bands. We have survived all events like 911, Katrina weather plus Covid where with the support of our landlord we built an outdoor space in the parking lot and were allowed to stay open and continue to support the community , our employees our families and the live music continued outside. Thank you for your recommendation to a recognition well deserved to my husband Jose Rivero – who came on July 4, 1980 immigrant from Los Arabos, Cuba, in a Mariel boat lift . He is a wonderful entrepreneur, at age 14 he was selling gallinas guineas on the streets of Calle 8 . Today he still cuts the fish at the restaurant. He loves his wife Angela of 35 years of marriage and 3 Daughters Jessica, Angelina & Josie

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have followed the Lord’s road. In other words, we have been blessed in the neighborhood where we are. We opened three other restaurants which failed due to not honest partners or economy related catastrophes. But the one on Miller Road survived all.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Fish House, Inc.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a full service restaurant specializing in Seafood. What sets us apart I hope is the fact that we have been consistent with the quality of products we serve on the plates. We have been fair with our employees too, creating a respectful and happy workplace. We are proud 0f our logo, it reflects the American dream colors, Red, White and Blue. We want your readers to know that the secret is out: we are known for being The Best Kept Secret in Miami… 30 years in the neighborhood and people are still discovering us. Besides the food and service, we created the Backroomlive. A place where music lives there weekly. Look at our music calendar online.. Throughout the years, we have hired hundreds of musicians and still some of those still play with us. They come back to support the next generation of musicians.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters…. matters that we are true to the craft of serving healthy food, sourced honestly and environmentally safe at the just price.
