Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Brunet And Yvette Gonzalez, D.O.
Hi Julia Brunet and Yvette Gonzalez, D.O., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We’ve known each other since our undergrad days at Florida International University, where we both studied biology and bonded over study sessions and fluent sarcasm. Years later, after Yvy finished med school and we were both back home in Miami—now juggling mom life—we started joking about: “We should start a podcast.”
At first, it was just one of those fun, not serious comments we’d throw around. But one day over lunch, we looked at each other and said, “No, but seriously… let’s just do it.” And Funny Medicine Podcast was born.
We created it with one goal: to make people laugh while actually learning something. Medicine can be fascinating, weird, and hilarious—but most of the time it’s presented in a way that’s either dry or intimidating. We wanted to change that. Julia (me) took on editing, production, social media, and research, while Dr. Yvy brought her medical expertise and real talk.
We started recording in the middle of mom chaos, fitting in episodes between nap times, on-call schedules, and overall real life. Slowly but surely, our mix of humor, science, and unfiltered storytelling started catching on. Our episodes on bizarre medical phenomena, misunderstood health myths, deciphering misinformation, and weird history in medicine found an audience that wanted to laugh and learn.
What started as two biology majors reconnecting post-med school and post-kids turned into a podcast that’s building a real community. We’re still growing, still laughing, and still committed to making medicine make sense—one sarcastic episode at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road—but it’s been worth every bump. One of the biggest challenges has been aligning our schedules. Yvy is a single mom with a demanding work schedule that includes being on call some weekends, and Julia juggles being a mom too, along with all the behind-the-scenes work of the podcast. Finding the rare moments when both our schedules line up long enough to plan, record, and laugh without interruption has been… a journey.
On top of that, Julia came into this with zero background in producing, editing, or marketing. With a biology degree and a career rooted in research, she had no experience in audio or video production, content creation, or advertising—let alone running a full podcast in both video and audio formats. So the learning curve was steep. Everything from editing clips to running social media and setting up recording equipment had to be learned the hard way—by diving in and figuring it out as we went.
We’re still learning. We’re still adapting. And we’re still doing our best every week to show up and create something people can connect with. It’s been messy, chaotic, and definitely far from perfect—but it’s also been one of the most fulfilling things we’ve ever done.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our work with Funny Medicine Podcast doesn’t fall neatly into the usual categories like business, artist, or employee—because it’s really a blend of all three, plus a whole lot more. We’re not running a traditional business with products or services, we’re not creating art in the usual sense, and we’re definitely not clocking in as employees. What we’re doing is building something unique from the ground up—a hybrid of science communication, comedy, education, and storytelling.
We research, produce, edit, market, and host a podcast that takes legitimate medical information and delivers it through a lens of humor, relatability, and real-life perspective. We’re educators and entertainers, researchers and content creators, science nerds and social media managers—all in one.
It’s not just a passion project or a side hustle—it’s a platform that’s growing into a community. And what sets us apart is that we’re not trying to fit into a box. We’re carving our own lane where funny meets factual, and where people can learn about medicine in a way that’s actually enjoyable.
That middle ground—where you can laugh, learn, and still trust the information—is where we thrive. And honestly, that space isn’t clearly defined by traditional career labels… which is exactly why it works for us.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The most important quality to our success has been resilience—hands down. Neither of us came into this with a roadmap or a team of experts. We had to figure it out as we went, often learning by doing (and failing) in real-time. Between Yvy’s demanding schedule as a single mom and doctor, and Julia learning how to produce, edit, market, and build a brand from scratch with no prior experience, it would’ve been easy to give up.
What drives us is the mission behind Funny Medicine Podcast: to increase medical literacy in a world where people often feel overwhelmed, misinformed, or intimidated by health information. We want our listeners to feel empowered to understand their own bodies, health conditions, and even the wild stories they see online. Making people laugh while they learn is just the tool—we’re really here to break down barriers between science and everyday life.
Resilience is what’s helped us push through the technical mishaps, chaotic schedules, and steep learning curves. We don’t aim for perfection—we aim for connection. And we believe that showing up consistently, with heart, humor, and facts, is what’s made our podcast resonate with people who might never think of themselves as “science people.”
