Exploring Life & Business with Melissa Medina of eMerge Americas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Medina

Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up immersed in the world of entrepreneurship, influenced by my family’s deep-rooted passion for business and innovation. My father, Manny Medina, a Cuban immigrant, was a pioneer in the technology sector, and his work had a profound impact on me. After earning my degree and working in the family business, I found my true calling in fostering innovation, building community, and driving economic impact.

In 2014, we launched eMerge Americas with a vision to transform Miami into a global tech hub. At the time, Miami wasn’t widely recognized for its startup or tech ecosystem, but we saw its potential—its diverse talent, strong business foundation, and global connectivity. Over the past decade, eMerge Americas has grown into a premier global technology conference that brings together entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders from around the world. We’ve played a role in accelerating Miami’s tech evolution, and today, the region is thriving with venture capital activity, startup success stories, and major companies relocating here. This year’s conference is March 27th and 28th at the Miami Beach Convention Center., with speakers like Palmer Luckey, Pitbull, Daymond John, Martine Rothblatt, Dave Portnoy, Stephen Ross and more. You still have time to register today at: emergeamericas.com.

Beyond the conference, eMerge has evolved into a year-round platform focused on connecting and supporting entrepreneurs. Through our startup programs, we provide funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities that empower founders to scale their businesses. Seeing Miami, South Florida and Florida as a whole emerge as a true technology and innovation hub is incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud of the role we’ve played in this transformation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building eMerge Americas and helping with the transformation of Miami into a global tech hub has not been without its challenges. In the early days, we faced skepticism—many people didn’t believe Miami had the potential to compete with major tech centers like Silicon Valley or New York. There was a perception that Miami was primarily a tourism and real estate-driven economy, and convincing investors, entrepreneurs, and corporations to bet on Miami’s tech ecosystem required persistent effort.

One of the biggest hurdles was access to capital. A decade ago, Miami lacked the venture capital presence necessary to support a thriving startup ecosystem. Founders often had to leave the region to secure funding, which made it difficult to retain talent. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to foster connections between startups and investors, and providing entrepreneurs with the resources they need to grow.

Another major challenge came with the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced us to rethink the way we bring people together. Like many organizations, we had to pivot quickly, embracing digital platforms and virtual engagement. But through that process, we strengthened our community and reinforced the importance of in-person collaboration, which made our return to live events even more impactful.

Despite these challenges, Miami has proven its resilience. Today, the city is a global tech destination, attracting top talent, record levels of investment, and a growing number of startups. Overcoming the early skepticism and seeing Miami thrive in this space has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of eMerge Americas . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
eMerge Americas is more than just a technology conference—it’s a movement that has helped shape Florida’s innovation ecosystem. Since our launch in 2014, we’ve brought together the brightest minds in tech, entrepreneurship, and investment to foster innovation and create meaningful connections. Our annual conference has grown into one of the most influential tech gatherings, featuring industry leaders, startup showcases, and groundbreaking discussions.

What sets us apart is our focus on bridging North America, Latin America, and the rest of the world through our platform. Furthermore, our startup programs, pitch competitions, and investor summits have helped early-stage companies gain funding, mentorship, and exposure on a global stage.

One of the things I’m most proud of is how eMerge has helped fuel Miami and South Florida’s transformation into a thriving tech hub. Ten years ago, the idea of Miami as a tech epicenter seemed far-fetched. Today, it’s a completely different narrative and landscape.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
eMerge Americas would not be where it is today without an incredible network of mentors and supporters who believed in our mission from day one. My father, Manny Medina, the visionary behind eMerge, has been one of my greatest inspirations. His work in building Terremark and later selling it to Verizon showed me firsthand what it takes to create and scale a successful tech company.

Our team at eMerge Americas has played a critical role in our success; every person on our team is deeply committed to making Miami a global tech leader. Their dedication, creativity, and resilience have allowed us to grow and evolve over the last decade.

I’m also incredibly grateful to the business and tech community—the entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate partners who took a chance on us when we were just starting out. Our founding partners – Miami-Dade County, the Knight Foundation, Greenberg Traurig, Florida Funders, A-Rod Corp and the Miami Herald – have been instrumental in supporting our growth and expanding our reach.

Lastly, the entire startup and innovation ecosystem across Florida deserves recognition. The founders, VCs, and tech leaders who have chosen to build here are the real drivers of this transformation. Their success stories continue to inspire and validate the work we do every day. Our rise as a global tech hub is a collective effort, and I’m grateful to be part of this incredible journey.
