Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Yacaman
Hi Andrea , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Andrea Yacaman, I was born in S.P.S., Honduras, but have been raised here in South Florida since I was 3 years old. My father brought my family to this country for a better life. Despite being in your classic Hispanic family with considerable issues and disagreements, I grew up in a reasonably stable environment with two loving parents. I wasn’t the best kid growing up and got myself into some trouble throughout my middle and high school years. There was a final straw after my rebellious phase that landed me somewhere my parents couldn’t save me from. I had always enjoyed working out with my mom and my aunt, but I never focused on making it a routine in my daily life. That was until I was 22 years old when I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I struggled with an addictive personality for as long as I can remember and could never find the right ways to cope. I realized it was time to grow up and dedicate a big part of my life to what I love to do most: help people! I took that addictive behavior that I was born with and put it into something great to obsess about! I began to discipline myself as much as I could and never missed a single day of my workout routine. I ate as healthy as possible and set a new and different objective for myself each day. I taught group exercise classes for many ladies, like me, with mental health disorders who supported me and recognized my hard work. After so much support from family and friends and the healthy habits and self-discipline I created for myself, I was not going to let anything stop me from achieving my dreams. I received my diploma in Fitness and Nutrition and my Personal Training and CPR/AED certifications as soon as I was able to, considering my circumstances at the time. I worked in a gym as well for a couple of months, but decided it was time to take the next step in my fitness journey and open up my own business. Everyday has been a new challenge, but the more and more I grow, so does my business, AYFit. The best part about my job is my client’s satisfactory results and knowing that I am making a difference in people’s lives! As I say to all of my clients, exercise is not a hobby or a job, it’s a lifestyle!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and still isn’t. Being a business owner isn’t as easy as some might think. There’s a lot more effort and dedication that needs to be put into it and if you’re not working 24/7, you might not make it. There is definitely the great and well-known fear that things might not go well, and a lot of your invested money might be lost. What I’ve grown to understand is that these are normal feelings, and if you haven’t felt them at least once during your entrepreneurship journey, then you can’t call yourself a business owner! You can’t let the feeling of the possibility of not being successful stop you. The point of being an entrepreneur is to never give up no matter how many times you fall, because it definitely won’t just be one fall!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about AYFit LLC?
My business is called AYFit, mainly located in Pembroke Pines, but it is a mobile and virtual business that provides personal training and group (exercise) class services. The virtual part of my service is always an option in case someone can’t find the time to get to a physical location, as I understand that people are very busy with their personal and business lives. Although I don’t doubt my teaching ability in virtual sessions and they are just as effective, I do recommend in-person sessions over the virtual ones. I specialize in either weight loss or weight gain while providing a clear and effective personalized diet for each one of my client’s. My classes include strength training, cardio, yoga, kickboxing, HIIT and Tabata classes. I am known for, not just training my clients, but participating in the sessions with them. You can see this as a part of the service because I believe, and have actually seen it to be true, that people are more motivated during their workouts when someone else is doing it with them. There’s nothing I love better than to motivate my client’s and make them feel as comfortable with the sessions as possible! I am very happy about my brand/logo, which is in the pictures I provided. My business colors are blue, yellow, and black, although the logo is just yellow and black. I am also an artist/tattoo artist, so I enjoy designing and making any kind of art., but this virtual project was a first for me! It was definitely a fun time!
What were you like growing up?
I was that funny/class-clown, intelligent in honors and advanced classes (graduated with a 4.2 GPA), a little too loving to my friends and family. My dad used to say that my heart was too big and that I felt way too much, which ended up being sort of an issue for me since I didn’t know how to properly express or cope with those intense feelings. I was also known to be very outgoing with those close to me, but shy with those I didn’t know too well, especially the “cool” kids in school. I was never dorky nor considered one of the popular kids; I think I was always somewhere in the middle; at times getting along with everyone, but other times feeling like a loner. I always found myself a little intimidated by those “popular” kids, but now that I look back, I realize it was just a normal high school kid phase. I was definitely always looking for adventure, although some would say I was looking for trouble. Since I’ve always had that addictive personality, I always took everything to the extreme, including relationships, personal matters, my emotions, etc. I always enjoyed sports and art, but never focused on any of it the way I would have liked to. Overall, I was a very sensitive, active, and rebellious kid.
