Conversations with Gastón Ortiz de Rozas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gastón Ortiz de Rozas.

Hi Gastón, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I think that everything is related with my family education, it was very important to accomplished the education goals, as a way to deserve enjoying adventures, and traveling for my parents was the most valuable way to invest the money, why would we have a newer car or a bigger house, none of this will transcend in your life, so my mom always said: “Lo comido y lo bailado no te lo quita nadie”, kind of: “Nobody could take away from you, the eaten and danced”, and this was traveling the world with four kids, literarily we did a turn of the world in Pan Am, I will never forget this us airline, and my parents were rights, they are everywhere I go because they took us everywhere, so they are still alive in my heart and mind.

Then another value was to respect the passion, as long you don´t forget the duty, so then my passion was skiing, in my child dreams I would live in a snowed city, with just way down street and I will be every day sliding, this passion was an expensive one so because of that I begin working as soon it was possible in the mountain, like a ski patrol, then ski instructor, then heliski guide, all this skiing professional way while I was studying my other passion, psychology, I got titled like clinical psychologist, I have worked in a psychiatrist clinical for a year and then I have decided that was my time for a complete enjoying of being a ski professional, travelling through the mountains, while I was teaching ski, there was a psychologist undercover, so I was learning a lot about human behavior in front of challenges or menace, while I was developing skills to copy with it, so I began to write psychologic concept and theory about the mind and snowsports, and risk sports, and self-improvement, how to coaches scientifically trough psychology to enhance sport performance, and competitiveness in the deferent domain of a human life, to get a more interesting and deeper Experiencia while you evaluate to a more developed human being, to enjoy more life, I see life through skiing lens, you need to be fast on your mind, to capture the secret just beside you in a life time that runs too fast. I have never quite skiing, and the cooperation of my skier profession and psychology, built a relation to face life, my greatest teachers I had in psychology used to tell me, Gastón take care with skiing, this sport is too enforcing, and you are a good psychologist, you are going to waste your path on the career, but then in time, I was presenting my work, representing my Chilean skiing association, in congresses of snow sport like ISIA (International Ski Instructor Association) and Inter ski, and also presenting like a psychologist in congresses of clinical and sport psychology focusing the self-improvement through a mind coached through psychology and sport, to face life, earning power and liberty to be administered with responsibility, to enjoy your life, the one you cares, the human beings, animals and nature, all this you learn when you rely in the ecosystem to fulfilled your life.

Psychology drove me to several Ski and Snowboard World Cups, I have been literally a psychologist training athletes in the most beautiful mountains in the earth, with my skies on, I have been with my skies on in Torino 2006 Winter Olympics, in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, in Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, in PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, I am still working in Olympics projects.

Also, I spend my Chilean winter season flying on helicopters, guiding riders through the magnificent Andes mountain, in the middle of nowhere, landing in wild mountain tops, sliding down, surrounded of high mountain landscape, while we contemplate actives volcanoes and glaciers we also enjoy skiing and interacting with they, while you recognize how small we are, but how big and great are certain things we can do, even do they don´t last for too long, these experiences define your personality through the way, they form and transform you, they keep being a part of you, they remain living in your mind, and you can write your life with the freshness and astonishment awakened through this kind of experiences, and share with others, doesn´t matter if this kind of experiences you choose are not the one others would to.

My last steps are the ones that explain why I am answering this questions, they are the reason why I am leaving here in Miami, with my beautiful wife and daughter, we also share the vision of traveling and knowing the world like an investment, and we have decided to restart a life in the US, land we have always visited and loved, it is like having a second life in life, while you still have time available.

We have take our savings and we have invest it in a Restaurant in Coral Gable, its name is “Dale Arepa Bar and Healthy Bistro”, it is about Venezuelan food, but also, we have a fusion with south American food, our team is authentically from Venezuela, family people that cook and serve putting the heart like the motor of inspiration. Here the business is about the experience, but this time the experience for anyone, for everyone, is to bring to conscience places, memories, flavors that connect you with something bigger than just the bite, it is related with what have borned in your mind with your life journey, the will to enjoy the moment when you fill your body with energy to keep going, but at the same time you fill your soul and spirit, to gain the courage to keep in adventure, or keep in yourself the authenticity of the places you have loved even do your life journey put you away from your land and culture, in our food what we want is to be able with a simple proposal, to touch deeper than just the power of the food itself, and this is what we see in the most of our customers, people from the US, Latinos, and European, everybody enjoying the fact of the power that is builded in the union of cultures, making a world where sharing is a value to follow with conviction…

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everything I do has always been to deal with a lot of adrenaline, to deal with this little part you can manage to be the best version of yourself every day, in front of an immense amount of variables throwing you tones of incertitude, to make decisions to be able to sail and navigate, trying to keep a certain direction, with an overture to know trough the way, where your life was meant to lead you, I really care of an authentic life.

What always keep me lighted is the fact that I work with passion in my passion, I made a profession of my youngest interest, I took and faced every risk, It is never easy, but it is a privilege to be able to say until today that I don’t regret a bit of the steps I have down, because everyone I did, learning from the consequences I have been able to prepare the next step to do, so I have always been there, so I am responsible, conscience and focus in a good job, to grow from it, enjoying the good times, learning from the hard times that they are a lot, but this is an existence condition, that nobody cares if you accept it or not, because nobody will ask our opinion, the only thing I am very sure of, that every step is a moment, and in a moment you say goodby to a beloved one, or somebody will be thinking of you when you will be gone, and this is a beautiful idea that built my everyday energy to keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a mental coach, using the scientific method, I train people to increase competitiveness in different roles, sport, profession, friendship, family, etc…, to get more profit from life’s most invaluable treasure, the experience.

Now I am facing a personal challenge that involved my family and the families that work with us, in this restaurant entrepreneurship adventure, to bring experiences through the quality of the foods, flavors, and service, we are a small place in the store itself, but we reach many families, workers, and people, through catering and delivery, we want to grow up with our feet on the ground, with the inertia that lead a step to the next one,

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
For me risk inherent in life if you want to have your own, an independent way of earning your life, the deal is to take risks focused in security it sound paradoxical but it isn´t, this is the only way to deal with fear, being fear an alert that your nervous system activate to keep you alive in the first place, when I think of my work as a psychologist on risk sports, if we pretend sportive outcomes, we need to be very clever on our work method, to deserve to overpass somebody else who also is doing his best with his team fighting for the same goal, working to enhance the performance, this is what make the arena of sport such a beautiful human spectacle, in this scenery happens the constructive fight for self-improvement, there is going to be a winner, then a second, and then. To aspire for high performance in sport is so demanding, that it is necessary to count with a multidisciplinary team, in which every professional should compete together with the athletes to face the extraordinariness to arrive to occupy a higher position, so when you work yourself this way in sport, you are preparing yourself to face every challenge or difficulty that life could put you along the way. In every other domain, like other professions, there is a lot more room for high performance, there could be millions of number ones.

There is nos sense to take risks if you are not prepared, this is why in my psychological work I talk about “Consistent Risk”, I mean, you decide to take a level of risk, relying in the level of your resources to copy with it, this is the support and argument, to turn off the fear, fear in risk sport lead you to danger always if fear is an emotion you could not resolved through preparation, it means you don’t have the level of resources to cope with the challenge, so this is not a challenge, it is a menace to your safety, so you should avoid it, this concept is applicable in sport as in life.
