Life & Work with La Cassandra

Today we’d like to introduce you to La Cassandra.

Hi La Cassandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Since I was a little girl music has always been very special to me. I loved singing and whenever we had visitors in the house, I would always put on a little concert for them. Naturally, the older I grew the more I came to understand there was nothing more I wanted to do than create music. After graduating college, I took on a 9-5 to make ends meet but always focused on my end goal which was music. I began performing in local bars, restaurants, and small music venues all throughout the city. I would clock out of my day and job and then run to my gig’s night. This went one for a few years and soon after I started to evolve as an artist and build a community. Just before recording this next project, my debut album, I decided to leave my 9-5 behind to become a full-time musician. This was a bet on myself, but I felt it was time to give it my all. Making that leap was the pivotal moment in my career and since then things just started to bloom and fall into place.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not!!! Being an indie artist comes with its own ups and downs and while growth has been consistent, it has not been linear. For every yes, there has been many more nos. Reality is as an indie artist everything is difficult. You have to be mentally strong and want it more. There were times (and for a long time) I was a one-person team and had to learn through mistakes. I’m grateful for those struggles because they are what build character and throughout the years, I’ve learned that no one will defend your art like yourself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Dominican-American singer-songwriter. Although I was born in the United States, I grew up very connected to my roots, and music was always played at home. From listening to boleros, merengues to the R&B I grew gravitating to a variety of great artists who have influenced my music such as Juan Gabriel, Gloria Estefan, Juan Luis Guerra, SADE, and Celia Cruz. These influences fueled my affinity for melding the old and timeless with the new, reinterpreting tropical folklore with a modern twist.

My evolution as an artist has resulted in significant traction in my career from opening at Yankee Stadium to performing at the Havana Jazz Festival, to name a few. Most importantly, I’d have to say I’m most proud of my most recent project, my debut album (which is set to release end of March 2023)! I wrote and co-produced this album and brought to life an important time of my life, my story, and most most honest version of who I am at my core. Comprised of 10 songs, it’s a dynamic Latin pop album where the core genres are Tropical and Bolero and I would best describe it as dramatic, passionate, romantic, and unexpected.

For me it was very important to take a vow to womanhood and the celebration of life; also paying great respect and tribute to my native roots, Dominican Republic.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being true to yourself. People can feel sincerity and genuineness.
