What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?

All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others.  At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more.  We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

Maria Roman- Owner of Slay and Squat & Content Producer

The best advice I have ever received was from my grandfather. He always said, “Don’t hesitate. If you have an idea or a passion, pursue it. If you don’t, someone else will and instead you will end up working for them”. That was actually the moment I decided to pursue Slay and Squat.

Chloé Malaisé – Local Miami Actor

“This too shall pass.” It’s become my mantra and I’ve gotten it tattooed on me. It applies to both the good times and the bad times as well as both my personal and professional life. “This too shall pass” reminds me to always live in the moment because the moment will pass, so don’t take the good times for granted and don’t despair during the tougher times.

The best advice was personal, once they told me that it does not matter what you do, the important thing is to do well and be the best at what you do and we Will be happier.

Chanel Cartel- Actress, Choreographer/Dancer

The best advice that I’ve received is to just do it. Don’t worry about everyone else around you who are in the same field as you. Everyone is in their own lane so just focus on yourself and your strengths and put in as much energy and passion into it. Most important of all, do what you love cause it will never feel like a job.

Kay – Natural Hair Enthusiast

The best advice I’ve received is to be like water! Because water can adapt to and maneuver through any situation. Its very hard to stop water from going in the path it chooses to go. I think this advice is great on a personal and a professional level.

Jessica Costantino – Singer/Songwriter

The best advice I’ve ever received is “whatever is meant to be, will be.” It may sound cliche, but it’s eternally true. The opportunities, people, and events that are meant to be in your life will be there with ease. Anything else that feels forced or unnatural is usually not meant to be, therefore you shouldn’t want it in your life either.

Barbie Espinosa – Designer & Model

At one point in my life I was feeling impatient with everything and I mean EVERYTHING, career wise, family, friendships, love and everything in between. My mom realized and told me simply that everything comes when its suppose too but in a cuban way of course, “mija todo viene con su tiempo”. So long story short everyone’s life has a different time frame and paths. So don’t feel pressured by time or circumstances, you’ll get there.

Valya Romanova – model, entrepreneur, Aesthetic PA.

Best advice I’ve got in live was very simple “don’t think too much.” We tend to overthink the situations and events to the point of madness. In reality, most things we worry about take care of themselves. And others – we can’t do anything about anyway. I now use the power of my thoughts to manifest the things in the future. I imagine how I want my life to be and take every action towards it. I am in a much happier place now.

The best advice I’ve ever received is staying true to yourself, not worrying about what your friends, or even family thinks about your journey. As long as you know you have the right intentions and it makes YOU happy. Everything will work out in the end.

Amanda Thoe – Graduate Student & Content Creator

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is to put the importance of being present over the importance of being perfect. Especially in the age of social media, we are destined to assume that perfection is what we need to be striving for, but I’ve found myself getting lost in that and missing out on important moments because I was too concerned with being perfect, instead of being present. It’s a piece of advice I always reference whenever I start feel myself losing sight of the little moments in life that really matter, it always grounds me and reminds me to just be.

Best Advice that I’ve received was from my mother (Felecia Allen): Never follow the pack, be your own man & stand tall. Others want to fit in, while you’ll always stand out.
