Rising Stars: Meet Vicky Salas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Salas.

Hi Vicky, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, my family immigrated to the US from Venezuela. Being a first-generation immigrant has its own challenges, but I am grateful for the opportunity to live in a place where despite current political situations – I am able to follow my dreams.

In my high school years, I got the opportunity to be an on-air DJ at 88.5FM WKPX. This was my first taste of what it would be like to be a professional communicator – and I was in love. I eventually became station manager and spent more time there than I did in any classes.

After graduating high school, I attended FIU and got a broadcast journalism degree. Upon graduating, I scored a job with my dream company – Univision. Even though everything seemed to be going well, I was networking and creating a wonderful portfolio, I felt like something was missing.

Although I love being a Latina and showcasing myself as a Latin entertainment journalist, I didn’t want to trap myself in that bubble. In addition to that, I wanted a project to call my own. This is where my pride and joy – the Senior Citizen Podcast – was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t like to dwell on the challenges, because everything has a way of working out in the end.

My biggest challenge as a person is that I can be impatient and overly self-critical but the last couple of years have been a journey of self-love, acceptance, and learning to wait for good things to come.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think that when I was born, I already knew I wanted to be a journalist.

I won’t really get into the nitty-gritty of my whole story – just the things that matter for where I am today. I’ve gone through dozens of chapters in my life, working a medley of different jobs and hobbies. But music is probably the most important thing to me.

As a teen, I discovered a deeper love for alternative music. The majority of those years were spent at local shows, Warped Tour, and obsessing over music. As I grew up, I eventually fell out of the scene. As cheesy as it sounds, I still held it in a very special place in my heart and always remembered it as some of the best times in my life.

Fast forwarding ten years and a broadcast journalism degree later, I became inspired to begin my own show. I had built a portfolio as a Latin entertainment journalist but refused to encompass myself as just that. After more than a year of planning, the Senior Citizen Podcast was born. A show to not only showcase the local scene but to reminisce on those good years.

The platform is driven by nostalgia but shows the local scene is not dead. The show is supposed to make you feel at home like you’re hanging out in the living room with your buddies from back in the day. While it is relatively new, I have high hopes that this show will thrive and make everyone love (or least appreciate) alternative music and the individuals that keep it alive.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
In one word – Life.

Life is such a beautiful, yet fragile, thing. Life and everything that makes it up is what I value the most. Family, friends, community, music, experiences, food. Everything is worthwhile, and I don’t take a second of it for granted
